where can i get reeds for my stihl 088. I would like a tuned pipe also. And what tempure is the exust? I am thinking of making a carbon fiber tuned pipe. If any of you have a tuned pipe I can copy and will loan it to me. I will make you a carbon one for free. I need a pipe to make mold from. thanks for any input.

joemarty on fire for power:blob2:

Wow, I hardly know where to begin in reply to this post. I have been attempting to coax more power from chain saws for some time and admire your enthusiasm. I would not want to discourage you in any way. The question that comes to my mind is how to help you without putting out the fire you obvious have in your quest. I helped a friend tweak his 088, not too long ago, for more speed while milling. He is very happy with the results. The 088 Stihl that I worked on did not have reeds. I guess you could convert that saw to use reeds but I am not sure it would yield any more power. It is a piston ported design and as such is designed to work without reeds.
Your second query about exhaust temperatures was I believe to realize the feasibility of making a carbon fiber exhaust pipe. I think a call to the local kart racers in your area would reveal someone that could give you approximate exhaust gas temperatures. Some of the more knowledgeable tuners use a pyrometer for just this purpose, Whether the adhesives used in carbon fiber can withstand these temperatures or not is beyond my knowledge.
I know people get tired of me preaching this but it is the truth nonetheless. Most people with a properly tuned, stock saw, that is in good repair and has a sharp chain that is well matched to the task at hand, do not need additional tricks done to their equipment. What do you need to do with an 088 Stihl that it can not now do? Mike

A long time ago, when snowmobiling was young, a few enterprising souls fooled around with converting the snowmobile engines of the day from piston-ported to reed-valve induction. Often by stealing parts from outboard engines. The costs were often outrageous; had to buy reed valve components, weld and machine engine cases or cylinders to accomodate , etc.

Peak power often suffered, but advantage was gained in flattening the power curve. Would that be an advantage in milling? Perhaps, but a sharp engine tuner could possibly lower your tranfer ports and "peak" your exhaust port to broaden your torque peak with less expense. Of course, you tailor your torque peak with the tuner, as well, but a tuner actually "supercharges" the cylinder right around a certain RPM, with some consideration for atmospheric conditions, but can actually rob power at other points.

Do you need to know exhaust temps to try to guage whether or not a laminated carbon-fiber exhaust tuner will hold up, or are you working out tuner dimensions based on gas densities, etc?

There used to be a book, now out of print dealing with many of these issues:
TWO-STROKE TUNER'S HANDBOOK ISBN 0-912656-41-7 (an out of print classic) Gordon Jennings, H.P. Books.

If you can find a copy, it's a gold mine.

Hey, joemarty, I found that a Kawasaki 125 pipe cut to length and fitted, worked very well on an 084 I built. As for reeds they are great for keeping crankcase pressure up, would also allow you to create some boost ports like a motorcycle, if its a hotsaw your looking for your started in the right direction. Good Luck Jon.

need exusht temp so I can make carbon pipe. I need to use right resin so it will hold together. I have a 125 motor cycle pipe iam thinking of taking a mold from. only thing holding me back is figuring out that crazy stihl muffler clamp. I would much rather have two studs, than clamp system. my air mod to saw help alot see pic.

finshed up my carbon pipe the other day. took me 8 hours to make. Put it took me a month of research to figure out formula. If any body would like a copy for reasonable fee or good, good trade for porting head work let me. Here are some pictures of pipe and my son idea air powered scooter at 3 miles hour.

yo joe marty did you ever build it?

Did you build this beast of an 088?

What is the deal about reed valves? Is this a better design or did it cost too much? Break or what?

Joe Marty Carbon Pipe

Hi

I know this is a very old thread but I would love to know how this pipe worked and whether Joe can still offer a copy. I may be interested and any help getting in touch with him will be appreciated.

I would not bother, Don't intend to be negative, but pretty easy to see the pipe is not even close to the right shape. Might cut faster than a muffler based on reduced back pressure, but is not going to have much of a pipe effect to aid with charging and won't compair to a propper pipe.

I sure would plan on making a basic metal pipe before to fine tune lengths before investing in exotic materials. Also don't build the pipe before moddifying the saw, numbers need to be changed, a pipe built for a stock saw is not going to be right for a ported saw.

It's also no simple deal to put reeds on a piston ported saw motor. Done right it's going to involve substantial machiening to the intake and drastic changes to the porting.

i don't even know how i found this thread but im going to go out on a limb and say it never happened. judging by the pictures provided. that black pipe is a couple feet long, and would be quite in the way. also i am not too sure what the small section of braided flex pipe and a 90* bend have to do with anything. as far as my knowledge of 2 strokes goes, its missing the expansion chamber so it wouldn't be scavenging exhaust gasses very well. also if he was capable of messing with carbon fiber and adapting a reeds to a piston ported motor i would have expected something more than duct tape to hold a blower onto the scooter.

Six years in an internet forum is basically a lifetime. This guy wasn't ever the real deal to begin with.
