I did notice that he still has all ten fingers. That's an amazing feat in itself.

Now, what happens when he runs into a piece of stubborn crotchwood that says, "Sorry, dude, I'm tougher than you are." ? :dizzy:

yea...them little straight rounds split nice and easy. i wondered the same thing about splitting a crotch or something with a tough knot in it.

but, the ingenuity was good, but it appears you have to pay close attention to what you're doing. in other words, don't have any girls hanging around while you're splitting.

The shear bolt on the baler's flywheel will pop...hopefully.

I don't know that it matters. This guy is going to get popped in the face sooner or later.

+1! Can you imagine taking your eyes off that thing while you try to remove some pieces that got caught up? Speed kills.

Then there is another thing. One man operating a a typical hydraulic log splitter can split wood faster than two or three men operating a chain saw apiece can buck it to length. Two men operating one log splitter (one guy brings the billets into easy position and helps clear and stack or load) can probably keep up with five sawyers.

So, I say any mechanical device like this with an automatic ram and return is not only dangerous but complete overkill. Just my $.02 :dizzy:

the arm attached to the split head--looks like a rack drive off something--and if so--thats really hard stuff--and if hes put heavier bolts in the shear point in the flywheel, if he gets tooo hard a piece---that pinion is going to blow---and id just as soon not be around---

It sure had some good guards on the spinning PTO shaft... and especially with that tractor.. having to enter and exit from the rear... I have seen some pics of reallllllllly nasty accidents when the body gets tangled with the PTO shaft...

I don't agree with that at all. I split my wood pretty small and I can bury a guy running a splitter. I have a super splitter and I can keep ahead of one guy running it. In 90% of operations I think the splitter is what holds up operating speed.

I wonder how many tons of force it would take to stall out or cause a mechanical failure on that thing?

wow.

absolute insanity; a 60 hp diesel tractor, and old gear drive baler, and a good way to lose a hand or worse.

The shear amount of power that baler punches has to be off the charts.

and as far as force, I reckon with the way it's geared down (typical pto speeds at 3/4 throttle is something like 540 rpm) and idling pto speed would be about 1/3 of that roughly. The pto would then be going about 170 rpm with a good 40 hp behind it.

I think the force would be measured in tons.

In other words, depending on the material, he could crush rock with that contraption. Not granite mind you, but many kinds of rock, such as limestone into a fine gravel.

2 things... the bailer has a rather heavy flywheel on it and I believe the packer has quite a bit of mass to it... and when you get all the mass moving it will have quite a bit of inertial force and figure all that concentrated on a small area (wedge) .. ouch

Ahh old farm equipment. Nice and dangerous. Dont wear long clothing around that thing. We should have a contest to count the number of different ways you could get killed or lose a limb running that death machine.
