I assume the saws that are made here in the US are of less quality from my impression of what is on the internet. Is this correct? If so Why?

The very cheapest Huskys (and Jonsereds) are made in the US at the Poulan factory, probably for cost reasons.

Regarding Stihl, the story is quite different, as most models from the MS361 and down are made both in th US and in Germany, for different markets.
Typically the US made saws have a tad less power than the GE made counterparts, but that is mostly EPA/muffler related, and has nothing to do with quality .

026 stihls are made in the usa and the 36, 41, 141, 142 and 137 huskys are all usa also.

235 and 240 are the current culprits, and with a historically low power rating - avoid!!!!!!

... but the 41 and 141 actually were pretty decent for the price.....

Are they made from scratch or just assembled in the US or is it a bit of both?

Depends on the saws. Stihl USA make the plastic parts for most of Stihl saws world wide; Cylinders are made in Brazil, Germany and the USA; many cranks and pistons are made in the USA... World wide company... Source all over, and send all over...

NOTHING is 'American' made. Never was, never will be. From day one there has been a global economy.
