Got a grinder, now what?

I just picked up a used grinder. The guy thinks it is a Efco one, he used it commercially and says it is the same as the Oregon 511a. And from what I see, I have to agree, I almost think it is a 511a.

Where can I get info on the settings of the grinder? Is there any info on how to set a grinder up for a certain chain?

I did find that for my Stihl RSC chain the wheel has to be tilted at 60* and the base at 30*, but what about the tilt? The manuel that I got is old and it says to also tilt the base at 10*

If your grinder is like mine, the tilt is for chisel chain. If you're grinding semi-chisel, keep the jig set at zero. The 10 degree tilt allow you to clean out the point on chisel.

Meant to add that RSC is chisel and needs the 10 degree tilt when sharpening. RM chain is the semi-chisel.....

correct--they were sold thru oly and jons dealers--as both brands were sold be the tilton co out of minnehaha--still in business---dont know if they would still have manuals for it

You think you can hold your file by hand and have the precission of the grinder which,if set properly has the exact consistent angles? like the chain did when it came from the factory?

Do I have to answer a retoric question? But I file my chain in the field with 3 -10 swipes after every refill. I havn't noticed any deterioration in my cutting speed comparing new chains and hand filed. Infact my impression is that they are at least if not sharper. But of course I am only a homeuser and not a pro who cuts all day long.
