CubCadet CS5018 Problem

The saw is pretty much new but has never run correctly. Less than 2 tanks used.

It idles fine and the low speed response is alright but not perfect, the high speed is useless and the direction in the owners manual don't seem to help at all, it will load up and bog under no load, seems to run a bit cleaner with the air filter assembly removed but still not the way it should. So am I correct to assume it is running rich on the high? And leaning it out by turning the H screw clockwise should help (it didn't') when I tried it? Again the OM doesn't't state which way is lean,and the adjustment range is limited because of the plastic emission tabs. Also I remember you can open up the exhaust and they run much better what is the process for doing this.

Thanks for your help I have about 15 large trees which will have to be cut down this spring because of the massive ice storm damage we had in the NE.

If the saw is new bring it back and they should fix it under warrenty. If not bring it to a certified small engine mechanic or chainsaw dealer/mechanic (look for the small old not pretty looking shops with some old folks inside, they usually know what they are doing) and they should have a look at it.

Let me put it this way stop screwing around or else you might be screwed!

The cost of having a technican look at it is minimal compared to a new saw if you accidently make it to lean or similar.

I know not the help you were expecting but I am not familiar with that model of saw.

Does your choke work properly? I'm Not familiar with those Cub Cadet/Efco's, but maybe the choke isn't getting opened up. Doesn't have a Husqvarna like "integrated" control when the choke is combined with other functions in an attempt to "idiot proof" starting?

Ebay special so it won't be going to a dealer. Looks like the old mom and pop repair shop would be best.

That sounds like the direction to head if you think it's rich. I'd be suprised if any carb. with EPA limiter tabs could be adjusted too rich.
There must be something else restricting the air intake to cause a rich condition.
How is the high speed if you have the choke on ? If it's better then it's lean, which is more likely with EPA machines.

Does it have a 1/2 choke position ? Maybe you need to move it one more step to "run" ? Not meaning to insult, just grabbing at straws.

Yeah have to love Unitil, 12 days for us also in West Fitchburg the problem is people will forget and Unitil will be back to paying huge dividends to there share holders while doing no preventive service like they should.

A lot of new ones are set to lean, pull the caps and try adjusting richer, if that doesn't help try leaner. If it had been gassed up when you got it the carb could be crudded up. Steve

??? I wasn't talking about starting. I'm saying that running the saw with the choke on, or 1/2 on, would create the rich condition you originally suggested you may have.

Gotcha,the choke works fine and opens fully once the throttle is touched I verified that yesterday with the air cleaner assy removed.

Going back to square 1, the carb can't be gummed since it wasn't run till I purchased it.

Plan:
Fresh pre-mix
Adjust low speed operation
Adjust high speed may require trimming of emission limit tabs??

If that doesn't get it running properly I'll take it to a small engine shop that I know about.
