The 041 FB I got today is of course 44mm and has a single piston ring. I am looking at pistons and some 44mm pistons I am finding have 2 rings. Whats the deal? Are they interchangeable? Do I have to find a single ring piston to replace it with?

I don't know if there are any gains to be had with the single ring or not but I have a nos oem that's 2 ring. Same part number in ipl for all models.

So has anyone used a 2 ring piston kit in the same cylinder a 1 ring piston was used in? Just want to make sure I am getting the right piston.

I'm just guessing here but I'd say 2 rings are better than one. I think most newer designs use 2 ring. More sealing area, better support for piston, less scuff

I understand the merits of a 2 ring setup, I just need to make sure the dimensions and locations of the wrist pin bore, and that the 2 ring setup will work. Im no expert on these old saws, and I have searched this site a bunch trying to find info about this.

I hear ya! It would be nice if they would lay out the drawings for the piston, pin height, pin diam, length ect meteor lays each piston out but it doesnt help with the specs from the stihl side. They're so secretive

Hell Yeah! Thats what I was looking for! (Maybe I shoulda asked) Now as long as the ring config will work in my cylinder, Im set. It about has to when the cylinder should be the same for all 44mm versions.

Does anyone have an IPL for the 041?

I have a hard copy and one that Haywire sent me in here somewhere.I'll see if I can find it. Then....it's a matter of gettin my dumbass to figure out how to send it.

Thats ok, I have one at work. What do you get for overall length from bottom of skirt to bottom of piston dome? Mine shows 1.923"
