I need some help selecting some upgrades.

I got a 455 on CL for $150, I sharpened the chain and have bucked up a couple of trees already, runs really good. It's a 20" bar and the oiler has been set on 2, the chain is stretched bad and I think the bar should be replaced too.
Plug and filter are good.

I was gonna use a oregon 72lgx chain, power match bar and a powermate rim and drum.

How does that sound? any other recomendations?

I ruined the bar on my brothers 455. I replaced it with an oregon powermatch 18", 3/8, 0.050 bar. Then I put Stihl 33RSC chain on it....the best chain made IMO.

I personally like the Husky bar.

Chain, No opinion..

TURN your oiler UP. The manual says, 20 and over need to be set on 3

Unless it's safety chain you ought to keep using it. File the burrs off the bar and keep using it. Use it till it can't be used.

Run the stock bar till it wears out. Its pretty junky oregon laminate bar, but just file it and run it. Stay away from the oregon chain, go with stihl RSC chain. Get a GB pro top or Windsor small mount bar. I have a oregon large mount bar on my 372xp and I am not to happy with the wear on it so far. Pretty soft and wearing fast so far. The only plus of oregon bars a are the very long replaceable nose.

Upgrades?

None needed really.

Turn the oiler all the way up.
Run the bar and sprocket untill they are clapped out.

Keep the safety chain for an emergency spare, and pick up a loop of Stihl RSC if you're cutting clean wood, or RM/RMC if you're cutting sandy/dirty wood. Done.

By the time you wear out the Factory Bar, you'll be wanting another saw anyway, and especially if you hang around here long.;)

By the time you wear out the factory rim sprocket, your 455 will be Low on compression and you will NEED a new saw.
(Mine lasted 4 years of med to HEAVY use and abuse, and still runs.)

Have fun wearing that thing out!

Stay safe!

yeah already turned up the oiler but the damage has been done, this thing was used its whole liefe upto now on 2. This chain has run out of adjustment. I would have to pop links out, can a chain stretch THAT much?
The sprocket looked *ok* but I wanted to toss the spur in favor of a rim.

I just figured with that much play in the chain, all related was prolly worn and should be replaced.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Hey excess- know where I can get a 372 for $150?! I saw an ad for one but he was asking $600. I cant justify that for how I would use it.

kdub,

Pull the hub and check the spur for wear first. A new one will run ya 30 bucks+.

Stupid set up on that saw also could be 3/8 or .325 so verify which it is before doing anything. God only knows what the previous owner did, and I have had a shop try and sell me .325 chain for my 3/8 455.

As for stretch, not likely. Either the chain has an extra link(s) or the sprocket is chewed to the nubbins.

How many links on the chain?

Should be 68 on the 18" and 72 on the 20".

Good luck!

I didnt love my 455 but for 150 you did fine Id say. I would like to try a 325 setup on a 455 though , for me they just dont pull 3/8 very good on and 18 or 20 inch bar. I bet a 16 would work better, or the smaller chain and a 18! It may work perfect for you though I just always want to cut faster and it didnt have the power I expected.

alright, I tracked down a Stihl RSC (had to go out of town to get it) and thru it on. Havent tried it but hella sharp.

I was gonna get an RM too but the note on my redneck palm pilot was illegible.
I flipped my bar , looked at spur again its ok. I think my adjuster needs to be adjusted. w/ new chain I used 75% of the adjustment.

Made the error of somehow removing the cover w/ the brake on and could not get it to release the tension so I could put cover on. Ended up taking the spring and all out until I figured you could lever the spring down w/ screwdriver thru a small slot, then flip the "Y". LOL lotta tension on the spring to get it back in, what a pita.

Wilsaw, you get the rubber malet prize. he heh
Computer user, thats pretty clever how u get that thar internet box to show them neat pictures.
