just wondering if anyone can help me figure out whats wrong with my saw. the saws starts and runs good for a few minutes and then dies out. i have changed the fuel line filter, plug, and checked the piston for scoring. i did notice a slight hissing when i pulled the fuel line from the carb. would that indicate a plugged tank vent? thanks for any help.

Run it till it stalls then crack the fuel cap and see if runs. If so then you have a problem with the tank vent.

You'll probably have to replace it.
just got the saw back from the husky shop and they are telling me that they have to replace the tank because you cannot replace the vent. they want 160.00 for the part plus labor. this saw has cut less then 10 cords of wood and has been babied in the short time i have owned it. huskies may have been a quality saw before but i think those days are long gone. what a pile of crap.

I don't know much about that saw, but if the vent can't be replaced, make another vent.

It seems like the vent might be Part no. in IPL is 537 35 95-01

I could be wrong about this - perhaps one of the other fellows knows if we're looking at the right thing.
I wouldn't give up on it just yet, Husky quality is still good, but all saws are made different than 25 years ago.

The vent is a replaceable item, mine came out onetime when I used a air hose to blow off the saw. Someone is trying to screw you.
i think your right. i just went and had a look at the vent and its not there anymore. guess he figured he could make more beer money on replacing the tank rather then just popping in a new vent.

Was the tank vent the part marked in the pdf above?

the vent was gone, when they called me and told me the vent was not replaceable and gave me a 160.00 price for a new tank i told them not to proceed with the work order. i did take that part number and called another huskie dealer and they gave me a price of 13.00 for a vent, i then called a dealer just over the border in mn. and got a price of 2.50 god bless america! and while i'm down there i'm picking up a big bottle of whiskey which is also much cheaper.

It's time to go back to basics.
First let me say - this is solvable. Don't lose heart.
Second if there is a significant vacuum in the tank it is a "venting issue" of some sort.
If it wouldn't start after you relieved the vacuum; then I would guess fuel delivery to the carb hadn't re-established. That is - the carb had lost prime.
Let's start here.
1. Pull the tank vent. Can you then blow air into the vent by mouth to verify it is allows air in?
2. Can you verify nothing obstructs the venting passage of the tank itself? IOW if the vent itself is good; then let's move up the line where the air goes next - to the inside of the tank.
3. I'm wondering if it's possible that the tank and vent work fine and that the fuel delivery problem is a weak or perforated carb diaphragm.
If we assume for a moment that the hissing is "normal" and very slight; then assuming your fuel lines are good perhaps it is another component such as the carb (diaphragm)
Don't give up the ship.
With the help of the knowlegable folks here you can get it resolved.
I have great faith in the AS core members.
Have a look and post back.

i have alot more faith in this site then the last guy that looked at the saw. i left the saw at the farm so i cant take a look at it now but i know the new vent worked. when the saw died it would start after sitting for about 10 minutes. the one thing i noticed after it stalled is that the primer bulb was dry, if that means anything or not. i'm heading out to the farm thursday so i'll check beyond the vent plug for blockage and report back. is the diaphragm located right under the top plate on the carb? the needle was sticking and flooding the saw so i opened it up last fall and this is about the same time the current problem started. wonder if i screwed something up.

Sorry to be a parasite on this thread, but I have nearly the identical problem to Dave and with the same saw. I have noticed that with mine if I periodically open the fuel tank....maybe every 5 minutes....the saw will run fine and flawlessly. Can someone tell me where the fuel vent is located and if it is as simple as cleaning it out? If not, I'll need to order a new one.
