I have the opportunity to buy two chainsaws? One is a Stihl 028 Super and the other is Stihl 011 AVTEQ. The 011 starts but needs some carb work. Couldn't get the 028 started. The 028 has a brand new FarmBoss bar and chain, 20" I believe. Neither of the two has a working chain brake. The guy wants $50 each. Is it worth $100 for both?

I would definately invest the money for the saws. I am not familiar with the 028 but i use an old 011AVEQ daly as my limbing saw. Very light, 41cc, 2.9hp perfect for a 16 inch bar. Stihl still sells all the parts to repair/rebuild the 011aveq (i am 90% finished on my second rebuild) If you can't get it running you can easily get $100 on ebay for it. The 028 is pretty much the same as a new ms280, which is a decent home-owner saw. I'd buy them if only to sell them (I'd actually invest the money and run them into the ground then repeat).

The 028 is a COMPLETELY different saw than the MS280. Nothing is the same except a few bolts and the bars will interchange.

However, the 028 Super is a great saw, and very very reliable. If you buy it and decide not to fix it, pm me, I will make your money back on it.

I played with my 028 super tonight for a while. cut up some hedge limbs with it out at my firewood spot. I set squish @ .015" and muffler modded it, and its a little animal!

Great saw! I want a few more of them.

I have a 011av, it's an okay saw, I really don't use it much, I should sell the thing and get something I would use. This last weekend I put a carb kit in my FIL's 011AVT which he just loves. They are kind of pain to work on IMO, the vent hose for the tank is near impossible to replace if you want to do it right, I'm still puzzled on how you get the one end in that hole???? Check the fuel and tank vent both mine and my FIL needed replaced they were hard as a brick.

028S and 011 are 2 of my favorite saws.Good buy even if the 028 needs a topend rebuild.

I have a 028 thats been in the family for 33 years looks like new. I put a piston and rings in it due to no oil in the mix. Then I muffler modded it and it runs like a champ. Good strong wood saw with an 18" bar. Just a tad heavyer than the new stuff. Can't speak on the other model the 028 is the little monster of my bunch.

011AV - great little saw

In my opinion one of the best small saws around. The 009, 010, 011 and 012 are all much the same motors with interchangeable cylinders and pistons. Light, easy to work on, never seem to give any real trouble and very reliable. My 010AV is an awesome saw for pruning and small stuff. I'd have another one any day (in fact I just got an 011AV but it's one I'm selling).

Don't know anything about the 028.

Sounds like a good deal - the bar and chain are over $50 new alone.
