I saw the post on replacing the cord, but my problem is a bit different. Everything seems intact. I pull on the cord, the spring tensions, then the engine breaks free and spins... so far so good. My problem is, the cord doesn't rewind. I can stick a screwdriver through one of the cooling vents and slowly wind it this way, put this isn't very practical... especially with a saw that's as hard to start as mine. I've taken the starter apart and seen how it works, but I don't see what is supposed to rewind the cord once the spring tension has been released. Clear as mud I know, but I'm hoping someone has seen this kind of problem and has a fix. Actually it looks like there should be two springs, one to turn the engine and the other to rewind the spool. If I can't fix it the way it is, perhaps I can figure out a way to add a 'rewind' sping. Sears want's $70 plus shipping for a replacement starter assembly... too expensive.

need to post the model number off of the small tag on the saw, it will start with 3 digits, a period and 5-6 more digits

well i have the same problem with my wild thing. I just take of the starter rewind and rewind the starer by hand

Here is the 316.350840 Operator's Manual. I have not looked through it for the stuff you need, though. Thought you could put it to good use anyway.
I have the operator's manual, which says nothing about the internal workings of the starter. What I need is in the service manual. Actually, Sears has used this same 'Incredi-Pull' starter in many of their gas powered tools. If I could find a service manual for any of them, it would probably tell me what I need to know.

Since the starter mechanism has a part number all by itself, it's possible that Sears only replaces it as a unit and does not carry the internal parts for it (except for the starter rope, of course). I hope you can find more detail.

I'd start by calling the local Sears service center and see if they can find a detailed parts book page for the starter. If they can, they could probably print it for you.

I had one like that a few years ago, and after a lot of digging, it was made
by one of the incarnations of Macculloch, and you would be damn lucky to even buy the whole starter........

E-bay it as is and go on, just dont mention anything about McCulloch or incredipull, etc....

After a little more digging, I see exactly what's wrong. As far as I can tell, nothing's broken. My guess is I reassembled the starter incorrectly. I took pictures, and can show you what's happening (or more accurately, not happening). Is there some mechanism for attaching photos to this thread, or should or I stick them some place and post the link? Actually, I guess my first question should be... is anyone interested?

This is probably a good time to ask for recommendations for a new chainsaw. My now broken chainsaw has a 55cc engine and a 18" bar. I'd like to stick with the same bar length, but would gladly go for a smaller engine if it would trim a few pounds off the saw. The $400 pro saws are out of my reach, price wise. Any recommendations for a reliable chainsaw in the $200 range?
