I picked up a Poulan 255 Pro for $10 that I can start and run wide open for about 20-30 seconds and then it just dies. Then I try to restart and it won't start until it cools down. I took the carb apart and cleaned it out, diaphragm and rubber parts not stiff or brittle. I don't expect much from this saw, but it should stay running. What do you think is wrong?

does it cut out when Warm ?

do a compression test on it both cold and warm compare the two readings what color is the spark ?

if spark is blue both times then go to the muffler take the muffler apart check the screen to see if it is plugged up could be the muffler is plugged from debris from the engine and wont allow the saw to breath

if you need any parts consider me as a source

would suggest looking at the tank vent - make sure it is breathing properly. you can try loosening the tank filler cap and seeing if it strts to run properly as a quick and easy check.

These saws are notorious for loosening screws, on the engine and the carb mount area, and then the saw will be running with air leaks.

Plug

Maybe the plug can tell you something. Is it wet or dry when the saw stops?

If dry, then maybe there is a fuel stavation issue. If wet, then maybe an ignition problem or overfueling.

Bad Coil I believe

I started the saw and ran it until it quit after a minute of wide open throttle. Took the plug out and it was dry. Checked spark and had no spark. The coil has a crack in the plastic coating around the windings. I would say the coil is bad.
