what is the difference between husky and jonsered?

i have heard that they are built by the same company and i know they are both built in sweden.

is a jonsered as durable as a husky?

i can trade in a saw on a josered and have some money taken off but i don't wanna do it is its not gonna last like a husky.

I think in many (maybe most) cases, the difference is the color and the shape of the starter-side and top covers.  Yes, the red ones are generally sexier.

Why would a company have two identical product lines of chainsaws? What are the business advantages?

i think it comes down to customer loyalty with certain brand names and also differing targeted markets. dolmar and makita are good examples: same exact saws, other than color. dolmar is targeted towards the professional logger/arborist/tree care group; while makita focuses on the contractor/builder group.

i would never have purchased a teal colored chain saw before realizing that it actually was a dolmar, and cheaper at that!

Apparently the one who asked the question does not know the history. Jonsered and Husky were at one time very different saws. It is just in the last model year that most differences disappeared. Also, Husky has a few models that Jonsered does not have, or at least does not yet have.

I use Jonsered chain saws, only own one Husqvarna saw. I would trade that Husky 395 in a heartbeat for a Jonsered 2095 if I wouldn't take such a loss on it...I just like the red better.

There is a difference in my area in the dealers selling them. Jonsered is sold only in outdoor power equipment shops, while Husqvarna is popping up in chain stores and on the internet at low prices. Same saws, for the most part, but I like shopping at a dealer better than a big-box, and over the life of a chain saw, that extra few bucks doesn't amount to a lot anyway.

That's really where it's at, I think. If you can buy a saw and never need parts or service, by all means, shop price alone. maybe I feel guilty...I like to blow an hour now and then at the lawnmower shops, so I feel like I gotta buy something now and then!

Rmihalek,

I have thought it works like this nowadays; The husky salesman comes along and sells a dealer a bunch of stock and tells him if he does a good job they will not set up a dealer across the street or down the block. Then comes the Jonsered salesman and sets up the guy down the block. Then you have got a Chevy/GMC type thing and the manufacturer has a larger overall market share than he would otherwise have had.

Is the product different? Really, not much; parts mostly interchange.

I was a Husky, Echo, Partner dealer in early 80s, Jonsered, Efco, Solo now.

By selling the same saws under different names the parent company achieves better product coverage. If someone goes between 3 shops and one sell say jonsered and echo, one sells husky and one sells stihl, the parent company has been able to cover half of the potential market while only having to put out a fraction more in product development. It would also simplify there parts inventory, supply and market research.

I do believe Poulan sold 3 saws some years back claiming that they were (im guessing here) 40, 45 and 50cc when in reality they were all the larger model with different bars and stickers on them. By doing this they could run one production line, and sell to people who either wanted a bigger model or felt that the smaller one was more to there taste. Now you can get Macs and poulans that are the same saw, but of course some people have brand loyalty ie "I had a mac for years, but I heard that the poulans arent so good so I will take the mac" etc. Again good market coverage, little extra cost.

WOW! Thats American Business 101. Brand Loyalty! How many guys drive a Dodge because their Dad did, and their Grandpa, and the family all worked at Chrysler?......Jonsered were a Swedish company that got bought out. They make great saws. They have fans. Why wouldn't any other company want to market the brand? The Husqvarnas are Jonsereds under the covers......most parts are identical. Either way, Husky or J-Red, you would have one hell of a chain saw. I just bought a 2238, NIBWT and warranty, for $125...same as the Husqvarna 240.

Captain Bruce I hate the sea and everything in her.
Great quote. I am so puzzled by the newer saws. Whatever happened to just having 3-4 saws serviced and running, after every job.......just waiting to roar again? Now its plastic, carb screws, ethanol, and smoke n mirrors marketing in big box stores with greeters demonstrating proper tile grout mixtures?
