Husqvarna 262XP and Stihl 036 PRO

I just bought a Husqvarna 262XP recently and already have a Stihl 036 PRO. I haven't had a chance to compare the two in cutting. I'll probably keep both, but, IF I were to get rid of one which would it be?

Get them out, run them and be the judge yourself. The 262 sure is a lot stronger on paper if you've got a runner. Lightweight factory hot rod.

There was a thread a few days ago comparing the 262 vs. 361. Good reading.

Personally I'd sell both and get one of the 70cc class saws in the Trading Post :hmm3grin2orange:

i have never run a 036, but from what i have read i understand that they are not as smooth as the 361. in the thread where i compared the 262 and 3691, the cheif advantage the 361 had was the smoothness. the 262 is stronger, though not by a huge amount, but by enough to be noticed, especially when you lean on it a little. the 262 also handles better than the 361, though it is a few ounces heavier.

I would not want to rid myself of either. I have been deep inside of both models, have some time cutting with both and myself think there both terrific.

"If" I had to choose just one I would be quick to keep the 262XP. It handles better, has better antivibe and better air filtering. The two cut very close to the same so that isn't a issue. The 036 Pro does have a inboard clutch which can be nice, but if the brake band breaks and hangs it can melt things there and make a quick mess there including the plastic oil line. I also don't care for the controls as well on it.

Even so if I ever get the right chance at a 036 Pro for myself, I will be getting it

I did more vids that didnt make the grade but in that small wood the 262 was on average 0.9 seconds per cut quicker on a good cut with both saws. If the 036 took 2.8 the 262 was 1.9.

So guess which i would keep

I already got rid of my 261 and 262. I like the 036 much better although its not stock. Stock the 262 will beat the 036 but modded they are close enough. Things I like about the 036 over the 262 are: Clutch setup, brake setup, bar setup, bar adjuster, carb/choke setup. Also not fond of the plastic clutch cover and recoil on the 262. Pretty much like everything about the 036 better except stock power... Although I am a minority here as the 262 is a legend among the AS members.

I might just find out soon as im planning modding the 036, If it ends up faster than the 262 i will be gobsmacked! (and visiting the 262 with the dremel again)

Yep i will give you the side adjuster and the inboard clutch are easier to deal with.

My father has had an 036 PRO for years, great saw, 0 problems from it. I have a 262XP and I love that saw....it would be the last saw that "I" would get rid of for the kind of cutting that "I" do, it just feels better in my hands than the 036. Just my .02

262xp trial run

I finally got to try out the 262xp. I believe it was somewhat faster in the cut than the 036. I think I'll keep it over the 036 since I'm more familiar with Husqvarna than Stihl. Thanks for all the input.

Jeff, thats the way, make your own decision, but I'm not surprised at yours.

That said I just found a 036 on craigslist that I'm waiting on a call back LOL

I had the two saws out again yesterday morning and had some large cherry logs to cut up. The 036 actually seemed to cut better especially when I bore down on the log with it. The 262 seemed to bog a little in comparison on these bigger logs. Maybe the chain wasn't as sharp? Maybe a little more carb adjustment? Anyway I'll probably keep both, one as a back-up for the other. I don't do that much cutting except for firewood. I've got a neighbors elm tree and a hackberry to cut down. I'll try them both out again on those two trees.
