Well the first one is done anyway. The Stihl 640 piston ended up working real well, at least after the pin bosses were widened for it to fit over the rod.

Like I said my crude measurements showed it to be .022" taller then the stock piston. When installed on the saw it ended up with .028 squish. I used the original base gasket that was in good shape and stuck tight to the case and put a little hylomar on it for good measure.

While it was apart the saw got new crank seals, impusle line, fuel lines and carb kit.

My compression tester has been giving me trouble so I can't give the exact compression, but lets just say when you go to pull the rope, you better pull it like you mean it.

It was raining pretty hard this afternoon so I couldnt put it in any wood yet but with the little bit of opening the muffler outlet, it has a real bark to it and seems really strong.

Looks like I'll probably go ahead and rebuild the other one sometime since this one seemed to work out pretty well. Need to find a couple of things for it though.

Here it is.

It don't weigh quite what I thought it would either, in fact it was just a hair more then the MS460 that I weighed today.

Mark- looks great. Once you get the other 475 done, you might have to treat yourself to a 505. :)

Just from the looks of this one, the ports sure look small and with the 640 piston haveing a wider skirt, I'll bet a good port job would make this one make a person think they wouldnt need a 505.

That saw sure is purdy Mark. I have a 505 headed my way but it needs a piston and cylinder.

Nice, are the P/C hard to find for that one?

Sounded like Madsaw just found a piston for one.

Nice looking saw Mark. The scale is not regulated properly! There is over there a "set" button that allows you to set the scale to measure in Kg. :hmm3grin2orange:

With my luck the 505 piston and cylinder will be hard to find. I am starting to get a pretty good sized list of hard to find parts that I need.

Poulan 505 P+C
Poulan 4900 P+C
J-Red 111s piston
Dolmar 143 coil

I am on a spending freeze for about a month so everything will probably show up when I don't want to spend money. On the bright side I did use my Poulan 3700 for the first time today. I like it.

That is one awesome looking build!

I think you are going to want to run the highest octane gasoline that you can find in that thing unless you can verify that the compression is under 175.

Is the distance from the bottom of the skirt to the wrist pin the same as the stock piston? Having a higher crown will efectively retard the exhaust port and transfer port timing. You could raise the ports to compensate for the taller piston if you wanted to maintain the origional timing. Then that thing should be ingredible with the higher compression......not that it isn't incredible already!

(thicker base gasket or spacer is the easiest way to raise the ports especially if you have more compression than you know what to do with)
:givebeer:

Yes the pistons are very close to the same. From the pin to the bottom there about the same.

Thats why I was working on it so long today so yes! That is if you want to try a unpure Poulan. :ices_rofl:

Now THAT right there is funny!!!

Poulan shared their "purity" with every saw company out there.
They would make Xaviera Hollander and Heidi Fleiss look like Mother Theresa!

The saw looks GREAT just like I knew it would!

I picked up something you might be interested in for your "Mutt Saws" collection tonight. I've never seen anything like it EVER!!!
I am trying to research it now.

Yes you got some looking to do for sure. That 4900 P/C will be hard to find but if you find a 4200/5200 etc you can always use one of them.

What do you mean by Mutt? I got a dog from every county now!

Nice job Mark. Using the Stihl piston was a good idea.

It wasn't my idea, but for all intents its almost the only option.

Very nicely done. Glad you got the piston to work for you. What did you use to clean up the bar?

I didn't, I bought a couple bars from ebay pretty cheap and this one was already trued up and cleaned up like that.
