Stihl Paint?

I searched around and did not find an answer to my question.

What brand/color do folks use to touch up the white metal parts of Stihl saws? I was thinking about looking for a auto color at my local parts store but what i have seen is "too white"

It looks to be an off white or maybe antique white.

I was not looking to powder coat them cust put some primer and paint to make them look better.

Stihl paint

I've had good luck with a very light gray. Seems there white was more gray than white. Or a very light beige if your trying to match a part to a somewhat yellowed vintage saw. Hope this helps.

Go to your local New Holland dealer and buy the NH Gray. It is a perfect match to the Stihl Gray.

...cheaper also I am sure!!! Those Stihl cans are only 12oz! Just throwin out options.

Lol, yea. It's still pretty expensive though. You know how New Holland stuff is. :censored:

Probably cheaper than the Stihl paint though. It does match perfectly though. Sometimes easier to find for people. Especially me since the NH dealer is a 5 minute ride on a tractor!

i have got an extra can of the stihl paint id sell yah but in my opinion it does not hold up well. lots of folks are using valspar from tsc in ford grey

Yea, thats the same paint pretty much, only may be a little cheaper still. If you see a NH tractor sitting anywhere just look at the wheels. They are so close thatI can't tell the difference.

Search for blsnellings threads that he has started. I know he has a few touch ups/restos under his belt.

And it has been said before that the Stihl paint doesnt hold up to gas.

Valspar Ford Gray is about as good as I have found. It is much better than the Stihl brand of paint in terms of quality

I will take a look at those colors

I new i was a little color blind but the 360C i want to touch up sure looked off white. White, grey, green, what the heck they are almost the same anyway.

I used the Valspar Ford Grey and Valspar New Kubota Orange from Tractor Supply. They both seemed to match the closest IMO to my old 041's original paint. The orange is a touch brighter, but it's so close it's hard to be critical.

Im use same exact colors on my Stihls. Also works good on the old Craftsman /Poulan Countervibe saws.

Valspar paint

OK i found some vintage ford tractor gray, looks pretty close, but i really got a suprise when i used a petrol based degreaser on the paint........instant wrinkles/lifting.

I am going to call valspar to see if that is supose to happen.

It does not happen on the original paint, and cant remember it happeing on any other "painted" items in our shop.

Can any one reccomend a paint that will hold up. I will probably end up going with an automotive base paint.

If i was keeping the saw it would be one thing, i would live with it but I can bet someone will be pretty mad if they ever over fill the fuel tank.

Has anyone else had this problem?

That will happen if you do not allow the paint to fully cure.

I was going to call valspar about today to find out what the real cure conditions needed to be.

I set up some test panels to further test this, the paint had been on for about 3 days at the time. I may set it outside to let it soak some UV's and harden up some more.

I will post the results, any other input or alternative paint would be appreciated. My automotive paint has never had the charateristics this bad.

Best would be to use a single stage automotive paint with hardner or 2 stage-base coat clear coat, i use base coat clear coat alot more options.
