I have an 031 AV ,what do u have to do to put an atom module on it,so I can get rid of points and condensor?Thanks Duke
 
Hey Duke, Here is a thread that should be helpful. http://www.arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=25974&highlight=031+ignition Also do a search for 031 ignition or spark. There are lots of other threads about it. I wouldnt be too fast to junk points. That saw is 30+ years old and the points have worked til now. Fix em and get another 30. Ill say condenser is the problem without seeing it. :)
 
I put the electronic in.....then stripped it out and went back to points because it worked better.

If it is the condensor, you can just replace it with a polypropylene capacitor from Wima or Vishay. It needs to be about 0.2uF and 400V or more and have a low dissipation factor.

I used a Wima MKP4 0.22uF 630Volt 10% tolerance part with perfect results.

I am having trouble finding that part at distributors. You may be able to get away with a 250V version of the same part. Worth the experiment for under $1 in my opinion.

The link is in my original post for the capacitor. I would try just the points first. Just clean them up with emery cloth and set the gap to whatever the book says.... 0.018" I think.

I was wanting to find out where u got that capacitor, can get one at radio shack ? what do I ask for? where is your oringal link? Thanks Duke [email protected]
 
Geeze, today must be the day for everybody to pull out their 031's.

I should dig mine out from under the bench.
 
The original Wima cap I used came from a sample kit that they give electrical engineers (which I am).

I think that the cap that I found at mouser.com (link above) will work fine.

Duke. You will have to solder short leads to the cap to attach it (it does not have a medal case, so both leads). I used blue glue (gasket maker silicone) to secure it in the original location.

Please reply with your results.

I just bought the item above and it works great. I had bought a 031 listed as needing a carb adjustment because of hard starts. Not only was it hard starting but would not rev. The local Stihl dealer tells me to junk it bad ignition. Parts obsolete he tells me. So I figure I can get them off ebay. I buy from a guy claiming to have new 031 points and condenser for 19.99 a piece. They get here along with the flywheel puller another 20.00 and don't even come close to what is in it. I was going to part it and sell it on ebay till I read this post. THANK YOU FLYBOY for .83 cents plus 6.00 shipping with barely a tug it fires up and runs real strong!!:greenchainsaw::greenchainsaw:
 
I'm really pleased they worked for you as well. Mine have been in my "go to saw" for more than a year now.
 
I picked up a 031av about a year ago and from what i can tell i think that using the method described above it would get my chainsaw running strong again, :chainsaw: however, I don't have that much experience repairing chainsaws or anything by that means but catch on real quick and follow directions real well.

This being said is there any way for someone to post a picture of where this piece would go and what the wires would connect to. It would be greatly appreciated!

I picked up some caps today,was wondering if these would work.
.022uf @ 630v.
anybody want to try one PM me,will send one for free,would like to know if they would work.

I highly doubt those would work. They need to be in the 0.1-0.22uf range. Additionally they need to be low dissipation factor caps.....which are kind of a specialized things. The caps from Wima are proven to work on several saws. Additionally, I reverse engineered a good stock condenser to prove that out.
