I have a few old saws that the front rubber handle grip has come off of, what's good to replace these with ? Any generic material that folks are using to restore old saws or just make the less slippery to hold in use ?

Heater hose works great.Got a few older Homies and a couple 041's with this treatment.A lot easier on the hands.
Bicycle handle bar tape has been mentioned.

Maybe locate some of that Plasti Dip Grip Rubber Coating used to dip tool handles in. Bedliner material might work well too.

Yes, that is garden hose on the handle. Stop with the looks..... It was like that when I bought it.

Stihl handle bar hose works the best.

I bought some of that years ago but never got round to fitting it. Is there any special tricks to getting it on to the bar? It looks like it would be a pain to fit.

Regards

Phil

Ohhhhh yea, it is not the easiest thing to get on but does the best job I ever seen, the product is actually designed for its intended use. We have a thread on here that explains how to get it on, don`t know if the search function will find it but I will give it a try.

Brad,
WOW! Your Stihl 076 Super looks like a never-fired, brand-new saw! SHARP!
Thanks for the link on the shrink tubing... I just might try it myself on my 041!

Or, I might see if I can locate some of the black 3M Grip tape that JohnDirt82 mentioned.
Thanks for your tip too, JohnDirt82!

Brad, that sure looks nice. Mind if I as what size shrink you used? It says it has a 3:1 shrink ratio, but I'd guess if ya used say the 1.3" that you could control its shrinkage evenly over a 3/4" handle bar.

Some of the old McCullochs had a coating similar to plasti Dip. The 790's on my shelf have it on the top section of the handlebar, extending about 1" down each side.

That is so pimp.

You know that actualy has a neat look to it. Almost like it's "snakeskin"...:yoyo:

I have used Blue silicone heater hose on a lot of work saws. Use dish washing liquid and it goes on pretty good. When it dries out it sticks in place good also. The silicone hose is preety soft and gives a good grip too.
