Just picked up a 044/440. Its used but relatively stock except a big bore kit. Trying to decide if i should Maxflow/Holeshot the intake or not. Kind of not a fan of the look or the skinned knuckles i get starting my saw, but like the 135cfm. Would like the old style better. Other decision to be made is exhaust power port or just dual port or even triple port is an option. Any suggestions will help.

Factory dual port cover is all you need. I like to open up the port in the cover a little more though.

Like TT said, same filter works on even ported 066s and 088s. So no way your 044BB is coming anywhere near the limits of the filter.

I did put one on a flow bench at one point, cant remember exactly what the result was but it was well over 100 CFM. 044BB at best would not be able to draw more than about 30 CFM.

I read these things and I see some confusion about the "capacity" of a filter vs the "restriction". I think talking about capacity is not relevant, as it will depend on the pressure exerted.

Any filter that reduces the restriction of air flow will increase throttle response and the saw's power.

I know the K&N and HD-2 made a noticeable difference when I put them on my 044. I prefer the HD-2 over the K&N because of the difficulty cleaning the K&N.

I believe Chad's dyno testing said that the HD-2 and Max Flow produced the same power. The Max Flow has more capacity before it needs to be cleaned, but takes up more space, so you decide.

I believe the dyno also resulted in large gains from removing the filter, which is not an option for in field conditions.

At $30.- from my local dealer, I am very happy with them.

First, I have heard nothing but good things about the Max Flow, so I am certainly not knocking them, the only downside being the addl bulk.

However, did you test a Max Flow compared to an HD-2 and see an increase? Even w/o re-tuning (or should I say especially w/o re-tuning) if it is less restrictive the dyno should have reflected an increase in power. I don't think he re-tuned it w/o a filter either, but power increased. Leaning the saw out should do that.

I just like the smaller footprint, my preference.

I took the hd2 off because of the fines that get packed in it.

I still had to re-tune goin from hd2 to maxflo on the 066
