Hey all:

I picked this saw up yesterday for free. New gas and it started right up and ran fine. I'm not trying to sell this saw with this post, so don't go gettin no evil ideas. Probably I'll hang onto it awhile. Very cool little saw.

Anyway, I AM curious what you Homie fellas think it's worth. Once the grime is removed, it'll be one of the cleanest older saws I think I've seen. I know these were about as common as dirt back in the day, and there seem to be a lot of them still around.

Yeah, pics, so I can prove it really happened. :givebeer:

$100 Canadian? :)

$100 Canadian = $100 American within a few cents for the past year FWIW.

I think value will depend on how you sell it. Ive seen saws like this (same vintage, similar shape) on craigslist for $150 (doubt they sold for it) and at garage sales for $30.

I sold two homelites this past year - newer so probably more useable, but less collectable. One was in similar shape. They sold for $75 and $100.

Its a nice looking saw & I still think nothing beats the sound of an XL12 idle.

I think you might be able to get 150 or so for it on the bay! Ive seen really nice ones go for that up to 200 but they are few and far between.

If you are selling them locally then your reputation will sell them, better the rep the higher the price..... LOL

Not really much of a hot used chainsaw market up here in this little burg, Jerry. When it comes time, I'll likely list it on AS for sale or trade.

Who knows, maybe someone will come along and offer to trade me even up for an 028S or something. A guy can never have enough strong running 028S saws. ;)

Nice, had a "red" one, one of the last made before Homelite [actually J.deere] ruined the company, sent it broke, and shut it down, deere on *sold* it to TTI, cost deere dear, mail is $200 million tear up, was costing a million dollars a week or some silly figure like that just to open the doors

The SXL was a honest c/saw, but no AV, heavy, and noise made it non friendly c/saw to use, well past its use by date, about the only chainsaw i sold, and for a crazy amount of coin.

Homelite 8800 was one of the best c/saws they ever built, a monster that outdone tuned/ported chainsaws in stock form, last of the American muscle c/saws, sadly missed.

Then we had great USA Homelite/Sabre sawchain, Oregon purchased and shut it, what a sad end, visited the plant in Greer SC., was run by a Russian of all people!.

Shame, USA pissed away all its chainsaw industry...

Sadly I only have one 028 Super left, I once had 8 of them but they sold like hotcakes once I let one go word of mouth sold all the rest. The last one I let go sold for $400. , the buyer just would not leave until I sold him a saw. His brother came back the next day and wanted my last one but I told him straight up no dice, he said he won`t give up until he gets one now.

You can get more on eBay usually. I bought one for 20 at a swap meet that came with a Poulan, and 65 for a SXLAO with a new chain. Neither cut like a "modern" saw but are fun to run and there are tons of parts at very reasonable prices. I have two more to be rebuilt in some manner.
But they do vibrate some (not at all like a super 2 though) and the SXLAO is a little heavier.

A new chain or properly sharpened used one does wonders for selling a saw.

The Junk saws on eBay are 30 bucks though.

Oh yea, they can be loud and no screen, if that matters.

Get your thumb in shape before you try her out. Nice find and certainly in much better condition than mine.

I can get $300. for a 028 Super around here any day, the homeowners think they are the cats a$$ for firewood saws. I had one chap drive 4.5 hrs each way just to get the second one I sold this year, he only cuts around 3 cord of firewood a year but wanted a 028 badly.

It's well known I have a big sweet spot for the 028 series. I love my Super, and have another 028WB coming on the cheap to convert to electronic ignition. But golly, even a Stihly like me acknowledges that the 028 design is a durn old one and there are a lot of better power/weight ratio firewood saws out there.

I'd have to check, but I don't think I even paid $200 for my strong running Super. :)

I'm thinking when I get that Wood Boss converted, cleaned up and tuned up, I'll have to turn around and sell it to you for $200 so we can both make a fast $100 on the deal. ;)

Hey wait, here we are talking Stihl on a Homie thread. Jerry, YOU STARTED IT!!!! :D :D :D
