Soooooo thinking of a saw to run a 28-32" bar. We have a couple of tree services who bring us wood (for free!!) and along with it we end up with about 1/3 or so larger 48" and up stuff. My 365 and my buddies 044 do a good job but thought it would be nice to have a larger saw and save wear and tear on our current ones. Thinking a used 395xp or MS-660 (not brand loyal). Been watching Craigslist and so far nothing. Not very interested in E-bay as I would like to see what I am buying. One dealer has a demo 660 for $900 with warranty but only a 18" bar so don't feel it is that good of deal. As there is no hurry I plan on just waiting but if anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.
Thanks

Stephanie

We run all kinds and my boy has a 394XP and that thing will haul the mail in a hurry. The biggest bar we have for it is a 42" and it pulls it real good. I'm a Stihlhead but I think I'd go with the 395 or a good used 394. A little mod work on it and you got a screaming wood saw. Good luck with your search.

Of course, I have my Dad in me so don't want to pay much:biggrinbounce2:
I'm sure something will turn up.

I'll vote for the 660. Just cuz I got's one. Don't use it much (kinda thankfully) But when I need a serious saw for some serious wood, she's the one I turn too. I picked it up used, P+C in perfect shape, but rough on the outside for $600, she wears a 30 inch Stihl bar with square chisel and a muffler mod.

I actually like my Husky's over the Stihls I've had or ran. It's probably a good thing I haven't ran a 395!

Good luck

I've got Stihls from an 020 up to a 084 and a 880 them is the Paw Paws for me nothing like slinging them thru wood like butter. But like I said that boy is a Huskyhead he has from a 350 up to a 3120XP and they all run super good. So I'm saw slut I'll use um all if they get the job done.

Prices on the bigger saws are also bigger. But if you can find a good used saw you'll be way ahead of the game. An old 288XP makes a got tough wood saw. It's all in what you can stand to spend.

Got a 660 myself. A back up choice would be a 395. Can't go wrong with either of these.:rockn:

Is you sick there buddy you can't be putting in a good word for the Orange guys. I'll send Dr. LP down there to get you back on track. HA HA

LOL, send him on down. I'll give that 394 a good ole Orange and White 660 beat down.:D

After running JTs 395 that time, I have a little more respect for 'em.

I hear you on that one. JT's and LP's 3120 and 394 have helped to lean me in the other direction some too. I got a little 372 in the operating room now. Have to see how it turns out.

Yup, those 2 saws run great. Impressive to say the least.

Get that 372 ready, the 044 is hungry.:biggrinbounce2:

This is not really Stihl over Husky, or Husky over Stihl. More for ideas on finding deals. I put an ad on Craigslist and so far, only spam and 1 person with an Olympyk 965 (guessing 962 62cc) that will be smaller then I want. This weekend, I may go around to some of the pawn shops but have never had any luck for deals on anything there.
Time will tell...

If you don't mind buying a ported one, that runs really good. I know of a 395 that might be fer sale.:D

Grab an old McCulloch. Maybe a PM1000 or a s44 or d44, or Super 250. Maybe a big Partner.

You could get an older saw for sub $200 in mighty fine condition.

Just be willing to work on them.

Won't cut as fast, but will pull a big bar and they're fun to cut with too!

Let the flames begin.

I have a 660 with a dual port muffler. It would cut awesome before, but will flat out scream with the DP muffler. I opened the stock outlet up as big as I could also. I love my 660. I have ran a 394 but not a 395. I would pick up the 660 any day. 395 has that gay outboard clutch. 394 felt close power-wise, but I just did'nt like the balance and feel of it like the 660.

Granted you may not find a great deal on one, But a good saw for the 28-32" bar range would be a 385/390xp husqvarna not much heavier than a 372 but alot more capable and comfortable to operate. I sold an almost new 395xp, Just not overly stoked about it. If you are looking for a cheaper route find a good shape 288xp Its one sweet saw and will pull a 36" bar if need be.

Those clutches do suck and from running both, the 660 is definitely lighter. However, I think the 395 has a tiny power advantage. If my 660 wasn't used to fall sometimes, the 395 would be awesome to have as a big bucking saw.
