I was removing a tree for this guy and that's what he yelled from across the yard as he headed my way with a stihl chainsaw in hand and I thought "oh lord, here we go" so I replied "yes, somewhat".....he hands me this Stihl MS 170 and says "you can have it, the shop said $72 just for the parts so I bought a new one"....the housing broke where the switch assembly snaps in and it's missing the choke rod, paid fish for the housing and he through in the rod so when I get the parts I should have a decent little saw for around $35.00....

Oh, no, that saw is junk, no matter how cheap it is, it's just going to fail. :dizzy:

I have a muff-modded 170 and it does a great job on the small stuff, and it even does surprisingly well (considering what it is) on the larger stuff.

As long as you don't expect it to be something that it isn't, you'll be happy with that saw.

There you go! True words.

I was thinking of using it to shorten tooth picks.....lol....

Seriously though, I'm not expecting much.....I have an 044 and 394xp if this one can't handle it....lol...

Nice little saw for light ground work, keep by the chipper, etc. And if it gets trashed its not a huge deal. I had a beater 180 for awhile and I couldn't kill it.

got this saw going the other day, been using it some and it's a decent little saw, I wouldn't pay retail for it but for the money I have in it I can't beat it...

EDIT: I actually only have $25.50 in this saw, I got a $10.00 cash back credit for using bill me later...

Despite the toy like appearance and cheap price, those little Stihls are seriously one of the toughest and most abused saws on the planet. Unlike pro saws in general they are run by people who...

1) Really don't know what they are doing.
2) Don't clean filters.
3) Don't know the first thing about ANY saw maintenance.
4) Think that any oil will suffice as bar oil.
5) Really don't know how to mix fuel properly or sense when that saw isn't running properly - "It just don't cut as good as when I bought it".
6) Think that a blunt chain can somehow act as a light sabre and burn through wood.

etc etc.

Anyway, good stuff  They are a great little pruning saw :)

Anything is possible! I had a ms180 which was my first saw, It was ace, light as a feather and for pruning etc it was the ideal companion. :)

Enjoy it!! :D

I have a neighbor that bought an MS180 with all the easy2start, no-tools-chains-adjust, automatic whatever stuff. He told me he had to buy a new chain becasue the old one wouldn't cut anymore. I asked him what he did with the old chain. He wasn't sure, he might have thrown it away.

Stupidly, I told him to bring it to me if he found it and I would sharpen it for him. Still hasn't brought it over, but he gave me a freebie string trimmer with a leaky fuel line that I will let my son fix and sell.

He also has trouble starting the MS180 (maybe the ropey thing is too hard to pull?, so I told him if he gets tired of it bring it over and I would give him $35 for it. Hasn't happened yet. Ya gotta have hope.

well...........I had to let this little beast go today, I was offered $125.00 for it and just couldn't pass it up, I'll miss the little beast....lol....
