Hey guys... I cut a tree down earlier today and left about 1.5 feet of trunk. I went to cut the rest of the trunk down to about 2 inches above ground. Trunk was prolly 16 inches in diameter. Blade got pinched after getting about 3/4 way thru. Any tips on this? Since i'm going level to ground with it... wasn't sure if there was a way to keep the weight off the bar. I thought of tree wedge maybe in afterthought but still at finish seems like weight would be on bar. I know I'm in the right place for answers. Thanks in advance.

Todd.

Hi Todd,
yep, use plastic wedge this works good, then dont cut all the way through, just leave a little bit left, pull bar out and pick-up stump, should snap and your good to go.

Dont worry about weight on bar, 16" stump wont hurt it at all.

Plastic wedges are your friend

If you don't have one handy, thin strips of wood, such as splitter trash or twigs shoved in the kerf work well too,

Before cutting the stump check carefully around the base at and just below ground level for rocks or small stones. Remove them if possible before cutting. Mother Nature likes to spring load these little chain eaters so they can pop up and attack when you're half way through.

Take Care

+1 ~ Get yourself at least 3 plastic wedges 5" long for those 16" trees. They're cheap and handy.

A wedge will work fine. If you don't have one, in a pinch you can cut with the top of the bar and the wood shavings will fill the void made by the chain enough to keep the weight off of the bar.

Backchain

You can also try backchaining it, the chips will get caught in the kerf and hold up the stump.

Everything they said. You can also cut the stump in half or quarters, then do the bottom cut, that way your only dealing with little pieces.

wedges are nice but a hand full of small sticks are free and readily available....break them about 3 inches long and shove them in to the cut after you get started good and they will hold up the round.....
