I am not very good at telling trees apart, this is something I have always wished I were better at.

Unfortunately no it didn't bud out yet for some reason from the leaves on the ground in the area i thought oak to but its in the middle of the woods so the leaves could've been from any # of trees. Cutting up firewood didn't want to cut any more like it until I knew what it was.

There a few leaves around in the first picture, but can't really get a clear one. Im positive is some type of oak. It'll burn sweet.

That's some beautiful wood.

I'd figure scarlet oak- esp. with those defects in the wood, scarlet oak doesn't really shed its dead branches, it'll leave little stobs as you go up the stem.

Lots of mountain folk call it piss oak cause it kind of smells like cat pee. Don't worry about it, good wood.

Generally not a preferred timber species, though on rare occasion it can even be veneered.

That thing put out some good rings for a few years.

Better than any hardwood here does.

its a black oak

Also being from Indiana (extreme northern) if it were to have been cut up here i would also say black oak, going from the stumpage pic. But blacks tend to keep their darker, more defined bark throughout the entire tree or mimick true red oaks in the tops, wich the first picture is lacking.Black oak will also loose the heartwood color of dark red after it has been introduced to open air alot quicker than most oaks primarily due to the fact that the grain pattern just isn't that tight. They also grow considerably fast, they will tend to be the bigger of the trees in a property managed lot, woods, forest or what have you.
here are a couple pics of black oaks that i have....
