Hello, I have a Stihl 029 Super and am currently cutting a lot of oak that is at or over the length of my bar. I know there is a hole on the bottom of the saw to turn up the oiler but I don't know what tool I need to adjust it

I am several hours away from the manual and cant see that far down into the hole. Could someone please tell me what tool I need to turn up my oiler while I am working the saw so the chain dosen't get quite so warm.

Thanks,

Farmer Jack

darn

I was hoping that wasnn't what it was gonna be. I tried a small flat tip & a small phillips tip & neither seemed to engage anything to turn.
I was wondering if it was gonna be a torx like everything else seems to be on the saw, or maybe a allen by the size of the hole.

Maybe ya just need to clean out the hole so screwdriver can get into
the groove....Maybe sawdust or dirt covering groove???
Orrr...your screwdriver is Tooo small?? Groove is pretty good size...
It should be no problem...I'm guessing you don't have a flashlight available??

How much can you turn the adjuster screw? On my saw it will only turn about 1/4 turn,is this normal?

thanks

THat hole must be the same size as the screw head then, it cant be any bigger than that.

Is there any direct connection thru there os is it safe to clean it out with some carb cleaner.

Im afraid while fiddling with it I actually turned it down a little as it uses less oil now, but I still cant feel anything that feels like the end of the screwdriver is actually engaging something.

I guess I will have to clean it out and try that. if that dont work. maybe a good led light will shed some light on the problem screw fer me.

Thanks fer all the advice & good humor folks.

A little Purple power soaking and a good blast of compressed air from a long nozzle air chuck will clean it out,,,

Make sure you wear your eye protection,,, and yes a good hand torch works wonders for seeing things in the dark!!!!

029 oiler question

Hey all,

I picked up an 029 for short money though the oiler was reportedly not functional. I have a few questions on diagnosing this to be the truth/ oiler adjustment.

Oil does get to the bar actually to the point where it is dripping off at the base, so my questions are more about adjustment.

1) should the oiler adjustment screw bottom out at either the high or low limit?
2) if no, how can i tell where the adjustment is?
3) I've got the sprocket and clutch off and can see the oiler gear and spring, i can see how the plastic gear turns the gear on the oiler, but how is the spring involved?

thanks much

I've got an 029 and 039, same saws just different cc's, I am running both oilers at max, the oiler adjustment screw can only go so far then it will stop, I think clockwise for max? At max adjustment a full tank of oil will usually last about 2 tanks of fuel.

if the adjustment screw can spin endlessly in either direction then i assume it must be broke? Im getting getting oil out of the hole at the left end of the little channel which seems to be correct. There is a little brass fitting with a pinhole in it just to the right of the oil port, do you know what that is?

Max oiling is to the right. The adjuster screw only turns about 70-90 degrees from min to max. I want to know what that thingy with the pinhole is too...

**Just because it is dripping off the base does not necessarily mean it is getting to the bar. Take the bar/chain cover off, remove the bar and chain. Blow all the sawdust and saw hash off the area around the bar studs. There is a outlet hole above the studs. Crank the saw and make sure the chain oil is coming out the hole. If not it may be leaking out of the tank or out the hose which routs around the bottom of the case.
Turn the case over and look and the black line, make sure the grommet is seated in the case and that the line has no holes in it.

1) should the oiler adjustment screw bottom out at either the high or low limit?

** It will bottom out either way...it adjusts a very short distance either way.
2) if no, how can i tell where the adjustment is?
The adjustment is on the bottom of the oil pump. On the bottom of the case, there is a place to place your screwdriver. I also believe there is a molded message which will indicate which way to turn. Clean off the bottom of your saw to make sure.

3) I've got the sprocket and clutch off and can see the oiler gear and spring, i can see how the plastic gear turns the gear on the oiler, but how is the spring involved?

The spring engages a small U shaped notch in the sprocket drum. Make sure you fit it back on in that manner. While you have all of this off, make sure you grease up your sprocket bearing when you replace it.

thanks much

Reassemble it and check the oiler as I described. Post back and let us know. The FISH has a thread and many great pics for the MS290 that will help.
