hey guys, i just picked up an older stihl 051 and i'm having a little trouble getting it to run right. It has good compression and runs but i can't find a setting that it likes for the high and low screws. Does anyone know the initial settings for these screws. Another thing i noticed was that the impulse line had fallen off at the engine side but i put that back on but still runs the same. thanks for any replys.

My 041 owners manual calls for H: 3/4-1 and L:1-11/4 for, I believe a Walbro carb. I just installed a new Tilloston carb tonight and it runs great at L:1. I have not adjusted the high yet because I do not have a bar/chain for it, yet. Saw hasn't run in 15 years and was given to me as a parts saw. Funny, it'll be my main saw now that it's running great!

If the impluse line had "fallen off' the fitting may be bad and letting it loose pressure and vacuum. You might want to try a new impluse line. Tom

thanks for the replys. i'm gonna run to the saw shop today and get some new fuel line and maybe a carb kit if they have one. the one from the tank to the carb is rock hard. I'm thinkin about getting a decompression valve for this thing. its hard to start once its warmed up. kevin

I have 2 stihl 051 AV's. One I bought in the late 1970's and one I bought for parts this year. The manual came with the one I bought in the 70's and it calls for the following settings:

H 3/4 to 1 turn open
L 7/8 to 1 turn open
(measured from the closed position of the adjustment screws in the carburetor).

Turn in both adjustment screws carefully without applying force until they bear against the orifice!

I had a carburetor kit installed and new vacuum hoses installed and it ran well. The carburetor vibrated loose and when I reinstalled it I took off the plastic block that sits underneath the carburetor and the gasket underneath it was half missing. The carburetor kit must not have contained a gasket for that and I had to make a gasket for it. Check to see if the gasket underneath the plastic block is intact. After doing this, I was able to adjust the carburetor to the specs and it ran like hot stink! But it lost compression as I was cutting up the last of the 6 cords of 4 foot diameter oak for firewood.
I plan on diagnosing the lost compression problem or transferring all of the good parts to my part saw which still has good compression.
What did you pay for your stihl?

Yes do check the gasket the goes between the carb and the riser block. Trust me these go bad mine was this way I used RTV fuel resistant gasket maker, it also helps keep the car from vibrating loose.

Yep, same carb as the stock 076. Start with both Hi/Low set to 1 turn out, then adjust from there. New fuel line & filter, Impulse line, Rebuild kit, intake gasket or Dirko HT Red. Sounds like you have it under control :msp_thumbup:
