BIG BORE KIT for DOLMAR/Makita

How good is quality of the Big Bore kit sold by Bailey's? I am sure there are some out there who have run this for awhile? Tell us all your experience.

There are several threads about these kits. I bought one a while back to upgrade a "Home Depot" Makita 6401 rental saw to 84cc. The kit is $100 and so far was worth every penny. I installed it directly as shipped so as not to void the warranty, but it was killing me not to go in there with the dremel and cleanup some casting flash. There isn't much, but it's there.

After about 5 tanks or so, it's definitely getting stronger. I haven't cut much wood since mid-October, but it's the saw I grab now because I want to break it in some more to see how strong it gets. I'll probably pull the top end this summer to clean up the ports.

We have used quite a few bb kits with good success. Current product is much better than earlier units. Oem quality is still better but much higher cost We let the customer decide. Keep in mind that a proper install is key success with either!!!

I've been running mine for almost a year now and it's been nothing short of miraculous. I could probably come up with something to complain about but it'd take me while and I'm not sure how impressive it'd be. Hands down best bang for the buck in modern saw designs.

Here's the saw with the big bore kit. I think I ran a tank or two through it on the log pile before cutting some cookies. It keeps getting stronger through 5 tanks so far.

Other Big Bore Kits???????????

I'm looking at ebay and I see a 54mm Big Bore kit that looks similar to Baileys's. The cylinder is black and the piston is coated black just like the pics of Bailey's. Then I see a 52mm kit that is not coated black. Does anyone know about the quality of these? I think I read that Bailey's said that two companies in Tiawan were the only ones making cylinder kits for the Dolmar/Makita. I read in another thread I think the guy was from Australia that he had a kit that the quality was better than Bailey's? Has anyone used these other kits and what's the quality like?

The guy was from Australia is Matt (MCW) he imports BB kits, I'm running one now on my 6401 the quality is excellent, I've had it for about six months, with no problems

Yep dat was me. They show really good torque those kits and are extremely impressive, especially with a muffler mod and extra port. Aussie sales only I'm afraid as I like to inspect all my kits prior to sale. Have had a few poor quality kits direct shipped which have come back to bite me. Shipping from China to me and then onto the US makes freight costs uncompetitive and well over half the total sale cost.
A number of the BBN6401 54mm original kits I sold went to the states and all have proven reliable and extremely popular. They remain some of the best quality and best finished kits I've ever sold.

I put a Forester kit on one of my 6401's. Fit and finish was as good maybe better than the NWP kit which I have to go on the other 6401 or 665 Solo I bought. Only have 10 min. on the saw. Had to do very little cleanup on piston windows casting in cyl. ports was smoother than the Mahle cyl. on the MS460 I'm building. I would buy another Forester kit if this one works out.

Did you have to adjust the carburator after the swap?

You will need to adjust the carb a little because the settings for the stock 64cc is not going to provide enough fuel for the new 84cc top end.

Anybody else have feed back on the Forester kit ? How bout an update on this 1 ?

I bought an OEM kit for a freind and it only lasted about 1 year and ruined the cylinder. He didn't notice much of a power gain even. I don't know why or what happened nor does he. He runs an older ms460 and an xp385 with it in his tree business. Said it was working fine last use and wouldn't start next time. The Makita 64cc version feels more like 70cc power to me and pretty sweet all around and for bucking fair size wood and possibly more reliable.

I just put a NWP bigbore kit on my husky372xp and did the muffler mod and I was cutting 30 inch oak and bigger with a 36 inch bar and man did that saw cut. I have been going through Bailey's for over 15 years now and they are great. Dont forget that they Warranty those bb kits for one year no questions asked return policy. They do not warranty the labor just the NWP bb kit. Hope that helps!
