Rebuilding a POULAN 25DA only piston rings I have found have the notch in the ends for a locating pin which my saw does NOT have (guess the later ones did) think the notched rings will work? guy in the saw shop told me they would, but I would like more opinions. Thanks

If you know the bore size and ring thickness you will have many aftermarket options for half the price. My opinion is the notched rings may work but not sure I would trust them. On the down stroke there would be no pin to support the notched ends.

The 'Greek' comes to mind.

On the down stroke, combustion pressure is forcing the rings against the bottom ring land. So, put the notch up.

I'd look for conventional gap rings with a gap of .008"-.0012" or so.

I've 5, S25DA/CVA's and none have the locating pin. If memory serves me, all of the rings have square ends. If you find some let me know. Good to have some on hand.

I'd be extremely interested in a source for OEM or equivelant rings for the 38mm bore Poulan S25 saws. The smaller bore (36.5mm) 25DA rings 530023352 are still available from Sears for about $5 each, plus about a million bux for shipping. Because of that...........I'd be interested in a source for some cheaper smaller bore 25 rings as well......

Edit:

Got a couple Poulan XXV series ring and piston part number questions for you fellows...

-In both an S25DA and S25-CVA IPL that I have (and the Sears IPL's on line), the 38mm bore rings are 530023485.

-In an S25DA Electronic IPL that I have, the rings are listed as 530029391. Are these rings interchangable with the older S25 ring part number of 530023485? That's the question. If they are, then it looks like Shep has a cheap source for them.

-Also.....I see that 530023484 is the piston assembly in the older S25 IPL's I mentioned above, while 530069298 is listed as the piston assembly in the S25DA Electronic IPL. Are these pistons interchangable?

I'm going to buy a few sets of those rings right quick if possible. Wonder if his source has 530023484 pistons, 530069298 pistons, and 530023602 and 530023596 CVA isolators...

Hope you're right. Just because they show as being available doesn't mean they actually have them. Tell me how I know.

I don't have the Electronic S25DA IPL so I can't comment. I'd be surprised though, if they didn't use the same part. One possibilty would be that when they switched to locater pins on the piston they switched rings and therefore part numbers.

Very true that's why I told them to call. I also know! If they don't actually have them I think you're best bet would be the "Greek".
