MS310 piston & cylinder replacement?

I have a MS310 with a scored piston and cylinder. How do I determine what can be re-used and what needs replaced? Can the piston & cylinder be reused if buffed out and rings replaced? All the scoring is on the exhaust side.

I didn't know about the trick of shoving rope in above the piston before breaking loose the clutch so I put a wrench in the exhaust port. This has created a small burr on the piston and top of exhaust port. (visible in photos)

Advice appreciated!

Most of the time you can salvage the cylinder, but in this case, I would say you need both. And a different approach on assembly.....

May be able to smooth the port damage out but I would just replace the whole deal myself. Might as well go ahead and make it a MS390 while you are at it........

There are always tons of 280/310/390 parts on Ebay, even some complete long blocks that only need bolted onto place.

There are also complete parts saws available, though I am always concerned that they could end up being scored themselves.

Ouch!!! It looks like it was caught in time until you damaged the cylinder. Read my signature, there are a few posts that will assist you in assembly of this unit.

Yes, I'm kicking myself for sticking that wrench in there! The local shop wanted $350 to rebuild it (more than what I paid for the saw) and I decided to give it a shot myself.

Roanoker494 (My wife's from R Mount!) - Are those non-oem kits on ebay any good? Have you used any of them? Going up in size to a 49mm piston sounds good, but would anything else need changed? Carb, etc?

What about one of the cheaper 46mm kits listed on ebay? Anyone ever used one of those? One seller has P&C kit for about $50.

I have not used an aftermarket one yet. This one is a bit pricey but it's OEM. I know Baileys is getting some in soon and it's a complete ready to install engine. Bailey's - NWP 49mm Short Block for Stihl Chainsaws 029 039 MS290 MS310 MS390. The carb will work just fine. I would also get a new fuel line.

I have a very low hour MS390 motor I don't need. To make a long story short, a tree fell on it and destroyed everything except the motor. This will swap out and give you a larger more powerful motor. If you're interested PM me.

If you are going to use a aftermarket kit go to northwoods saw and get a aftermarket kit from them... they don't sell JUNK! i got an AM cylinder from ebay only to have nothing but pitting and voids in the casting everywhere. Northwoodsaw sells good aftermarket parts... At least i have yet to get a bad one from them. Plus you can get the oil seals, liquid sealer, and a piston stop for about $100-$120 for all of it. read the pm I sent you too.

the 49mm top end is a direct swap and you need to pull the limiter caps and retune the carb is all... No other changes! You should be doing that for reliability reasons anyhow

i have used the AM 029 kit when my 310 was too far gone but the baileys 390 kit looks to be the best value around,drop it in and go:msp_thumbsup:

No pics yet, I have not messed with it much. I have been busy mowing and getting the garden finished. I did pull it out of the box to look at it. Anybody have a 390 Maintenance manual? I am going to need to get this done by somebody otherwise. I can not figure how to get the thing torn down. Then again, my technical skill level is close to "dissasembles very well" as opposed to anything else.

Just an fyi...... the MS290, 310,& 390 are the same design.......just a larger P/C
