Yesterday, was doing some firewood cutting, noticed after I fueled up, started cutting, then smelling gas. The gas was pumping, splashing out of the port on top of the tank, right above the fill hole? Is there supposed to be a tube or something on the port that is connected to something? Never noticed it before.

Yep. The 029 uses a 1 1/2" piece of 1/8" I.D. hose with a set screw in the free end. The idea is that vent air will come in around the threads of the screw, and fuel will stay in the tank. The MS saws use a different style of vent. Last year I had found that my 029 vent hose had deteriorated and took a set to threads of the screw. This blocked the inflow of air, and the saw would quickly starve for fuel.

Stihl 029 fuel tank vent hose

Did the hose deteriorate, or just get loose and fall off? Did you find it when you opened the case up? Just curious. I wonder if we should do preventative maintenance to our saws, or just fix it when broke?

I don't know what happened. Mine must have just fell off, prolly from the junk ethanol. I never paid much attention to the vent tube before this, but you bet I will now! And found a non-ethanol supplier just down the road!!

Me too. Thanks.

Fuel line replacement

I guess, replace 1 fuel line, do the entire saw? Including the vent line and vent. Change the fuel lines at your convenience in your shop, or risk not having the saw work in the field. :msp_thumbup:
