Hi, I am new to the site here and pretty new to the world of chainsaws. I am messing with a ms880 that is siezedlooks to be an ethanol issue from previous owner. Ive looked on the web for someone that makes a big bore kit for this saw but have been unable to find any. Also any help with drive sprockets would be greatly appriciated. This will be a work/play saw and would like for it to fly through the wood. Any other ideas would be appriciated. Is there any truth the flat filing a chain? Ive heard that this is the only way to sharpen a chain if your looking for fast cuts. I have beenunable to find anythi ng on this also. Thanks for any help anyone is willing to give

880 options

To the best of my knowledge, there is no one currently overboring, or making such a kit for the 880. As a big saw, it is the best out there, but for shorter bars I suggest an oversized sprocket, say a 9 or 10 pin in 3/8 pitch. The machine itself comes into its own more in the 42" and longer bars, since in the shorter length bars, (32" and below) the 660 beats it -- in stock form that is. Ethanol is the current curse of the small engine industry. I have personally replaced about 4 5 gallon pails full of carbs in the last two years due to Ethanol problems.

Thanks for the shared info I can use all the help I can get. My plans with this saw is to run around a 32-34 inch cannon fatbelly bar with a 10 toothe drive sprocket. I would like to perform some port cleanup work and a muffler mod or a dual port muffler. I would like to get the compression up on the saw a little more than stock. Basically Im looking for this thing to blow through wood pretty fast for no particular reason other than I just want to see what I can make it do. Does anyone have any preference on a cylinder and piston kit? Also would like to take to someone about flat filing a chain, I have read about it and heard that it will really spped the cutting process. Thanks

try DANZCO for your big sprockets,OEM piston and cyl kit is about it,port job,and a good muffler job, what model 880,depending on the damage the cyl may be salvaged

There are several companies out there that mae aftermarket pistons for the 088/880 same thing as they interchange even on the newer post 2009 880. However there are no aftermarket companies that make either of the two cylinders for the 088/880 and post 2009 880.

Porting hmm do you have a background in small engines or engines in general??

If not then i would highly recommend not trying your first port job on the most expensive saw out there. If you truely want it to wake up then send it to someone who actually knows what they are doing there are several of them on here.

Who would be a good person to contact about port work here. Ive built alot of 2-strokes over the years including port work and long rod big bore stroker kits on Micro sprint cars that they run on 3/8 and 1/4 dirt oval tracks here in the midwest. Im not saying that this makes me any better. The few saws that I have ported the rules havent really added up from the bigger engines to the smaller engines. So by all means I would love to be able to talk to someone or to send a cylinder off to have it done by someone that truley knows what they are doing. Does any one know what kind of acid or material people are using to clean up scored cylinders?

hey adam,
you'd probably get alot more attention if you posted this in the chainsaw section..
anyhow, you'll definately need an unlimited coil for that saw if ya want it to really run..
muratic acid is what you want to clean up aluminum transfer on jug, there's lots of reading about that. try the search function..
theres alot of great saw builders on this site as well, you'll figure it out.........go to the chainsaw section !!!

showrguy, Thanks for the reply back and the infor you shared. I will try the chainsaw forum tommorow Im getting ready to head off to work, the good old night shift haha. Anyway thanks agian for the help these little engines are a blast to mess with. Being a Diesel mechanic for a living its nice to work on things without needing a crane or four or five guys to help lift. Nice talking with you guys. Oh yeah by the way where can a person order these good after market performance parts from like the good coil and etc?

Just read this thread. Did you do any porting on your 880?

I have one that was ported, old carb added (not linited), different electronic spark added. The builder, Brad Snelling got 12500 rpm out of it.

Was a monster, stock. Now is much more of a monster.
