Any recommendations where I can buy rip chain, preferably east coast? I was supposed to do some milling (cypress wood) this weekend, and find myself with no chain.

I placed an order for rip chain from Baileys back in October, with shipping quoted at 1 week. Well, it's almost December and they still don't have it in stock. So two weeks ago I ordered a chain from Granberg as a backup plan, but it looks like UPS lost the shipment. You'd think trying to plan this all the way back in October would have given me plenty of time, but nope.

I know I could buy a new chain and file/grind the crap out of it to make it suitable for ripping, but that seems like a chore, plus the only chain I can get for my 461 locally comes from the Stihl dealer, and Stihl is about the hardest chain to be filing and grinding on.

I'd like to see if I can do an overnight order for rip chain from someone on the east coast. Any recommendations??

thanks,

Might find some on eBay, other than that, Bailey's and Granberg are the 2 main players of which I am aware. Maybe there is a bigger saw shop in a town near you, don't know if maybe Labonville has any in their product line? Might check them out, they are in the east.

A couple months ago Ahlborn did a blowout on 100' rolls of Carlton-made (it came in a Windsor box) ripping chain in 3/8 .050. This is the purpose-built ripping chain which has uniform teeth that don't need alternate pairs of top plates to be ground down. I bought two rolls but am still looking for that same chain in .063, since bars longer than 36" are mostly .063. PM me if you are interested in one or both of these rolls.

just buy full comp chain. want ripping chain, grind your cutter angle back to 10 deg over a few sharpening's

want skip chain, grind some cutters off

Joe Kidd PM'd me with a suggestion for a business one state over, and they happened to have Oregon rip chain pre-packaged in the size I need. So I put in an order and should get it by Friday. I have my fingers crossed this time, maybe third time will be the charm.

galde, thanks for the offer. I don't need 100' rolls, but I may be interested in a shorter length if you ever want to parcel it out. I need to see what will become of my aborted Granberg and Bailey's shipments over the next couple weeks. I'd like to have at least 1-2 spare rip chains around.

serious ?!?!?!?

Works a treat. Too many people get anal about 10° ripping chain without even trying just normal 30° semi chisel.
You'll get a smoother finish at 10° but in all honesty you'll notice very little difference running 10° or 30°. In fact the 30° semi chisel will probably cut faster.
I have 100' of GB branded Carlton made A3EP-RP chain here yet prefer 30° semi as I like it more, at least in our hardwood.

As widowmaker mentioned if you want skip just get a 1mm cutting disc on a grinder and take out every second pair of cutters. I do it all the time while people run around all over the place thinking they can't cut anything because they can't buy skip chain :)

You can use regular chain, me thinks ripping chain has a longer cutter, but it's no doubt the 10 degree angle that makes it look so.

If you really want to make some planks, don't let the lack of "ripping" chain stop you. Like said above, as you file bring the angle back.

In the Hardwoods around here, I use ~ 15 degrees.

yep ,i agree with the other fellas,i don't mill for furniture, all my milling is for structural/building needs,i tried every angle from 0* to 15* , i just stick with 30*, full comp semi-chisel in all wood types, works for me and i mainly mill cypress pine the end finnish is more than acceptable.

Howdy,
These days dealers only choice of manufactured ripping chain is through the Carlton division of Blount. The Oregon version of ripping chain has been NLA for a while now.
Granberg buys their ripping chain from us, so the fun just rolls down hill.
I show the only style we're out of is the most popular 3/8 x .050. I have an unconfirmed due date of 12-7-12 and that purchase order issued from us 6 months ago. It really makes it tough when there's only one place to get it, and they know it.

Gregg

i use 20degree alot in pine, cuts qhick just a little rough though..in a pinch 30degree or more will work just going to be doing alot of planing/sanding if you want a smooth finnish.

GD, you can buy/be or by, extorted stihl PMX chain through your site.

This is the best chain I've used but logosol/etoronist has a OUTRAGEOUS PRICE.

WTF??? I've got to buy a loop of PM chain, grind 1/3 the life off to get the same thing?

Come on folks, who has the stranglehold on importation?

Any EU users want to sell me a bunch of loops/roll?

Thoughts on LOGORIPOFF prices GD?

Carlton branded though Gregg? If so that's interesting as Jakmax said they can't get any more as did a sizeable US Carlton dealer.

Howdy,
Now I know where the Mad part comes from. I took some time to investigate a little on the 63PMX. Part of the reason our price was screwed up is because thet had to bring some of it in on a rush. So with the shipping added in to the landed cost, we ended up with the price we had. Everything from Logosol should be coming in on regular container shipments. It's not a lot but, the best we can do right now is $.38 per drive link instead of $.49 per drive link. As our volume picks up, we might be able to whittle some more.

Gregg

Howdy,
Before the Blount takeover, the chain we got from Carlton was Woodland branded. After the takeover they asked us to take the Carlton branded chain but, it still comes in Woodland packaging.
