Not all of the 365 models had bolt on intakes. Some have the round clamp like the 371\372 (I recently owned one). I could be wrong but I am thinking many later versions were also closed port. The X-torx models can easily be spotted by having a de-comp on the top of the cylinder and a blue choke pull. The only way to turn that 365 into a 372 is with a different piston and cylinder.

You are getting close - but at least the early 371s had the bolt on intake as well. ;)

I have a 365 special here with a bad top end. Does the Special mean it can be made into the 372 with grinding or is it just the 65cc version. Lot of back and forth info in here.

The "Special" designation mainly means the saw has the side chain tensioner of the 372xp. In addition most of the US sold ones seem to have the closed port 65cc cylinder (vs. the open port one). I suspect that has more to do with EPA than with the Special designation, but I'm not really sure....

My "special" definitely has a closed port cylinder. I replaced it a few years ago.

The 365 special can be converted to a 372, I had one set up with a ported 372 top end. Of course I changed out the carb, and intake boot, as well as setting it up with a 372 high top air filter. It can get expensive, so you need to figure that before you jump. The 365 special has the same bottom as a 372. I am talking pre 2010 on all of this.

One of my specials is a closed port 1 ring piston with zama...

The earlier 365s can be as well, at least if you fix the intake system and carb. Then there is the chain adjuster....

As I understand it, there were many variations in 365 production, that is difficult to keep track of....;)

Sn is 967 08 26 00. 99 4301417 wasn't pleased with this saw as it was no comparison to my 372 and 562 the 562 flat out cuts it with 20 and 24... I decided to go the cheap rout and got a 372 aftermarket cylinder and piston, buyer beware it was an open port 372 cylinder. ..

man. how long ago was that? i've never even seen an aftermarket open port 372 cylinder. as far as the 365's go to try put this in one post for struggle. all the xtorqs can have the transfer baffles ground out and boom, you got a 372. 365 specials from late 1999-early 2010 i believe don't need anything other then the top end. they have the same intake and walbro HD carb which is on the 372. the early 1999 365 specials had the zama carb on them and if memory serves they had the clamp on boot. any 365 1998 or older will be an original 365 which will have the open port cylinder, bolt on intake boot, and zama carb. i have worked on a ton of these saws and these have been my findings. the date of the xtorqs might be off a bit cause i can't remember if i started seeing them late 2009 or early 2010. i've heard that the cases of these saws were beefed up when the 365 specials came out but i have had a few cases apart and can't tell a difference.

1999, week 43 then (967 08 26 00 is the "part number" for the complete powerhead, not part of the serial number).

I have never heard of an open port aftermarket 372 cylinder. However, aftermarket cylinders usually don't run like the OEM stuff, unless they are ported.

Also make sure that the intake and carb of that 365 is suitable for a 372xp cylinder.....
