Recommend a carb or kit for old 024?

Hey all, first post. My father passed recently and I'm going through all of his equipment trying to get everything back up to running.

I'm currently working on an old stihl 024.

I bought some parts for it at a local store, wanting a gas and impulse line, and they actually gave me two gas lines by mistake, one curved and one straight.
I got the straight line in for gas, and cut up the curved one to make an impulse line.

It will start and run a little, but its not holding idle (the idle screw doesn't seem to do anything). I guess I need to rebuild or replace the carb? The one on it says "made in ireland" (the saw says made in Germany). It seems to have good compression, and the piston looks good through the exhaust and intake side.

Should I rebuild it or just buy one of the chinese replacements off ebay?

From that information, I think you have the Tillotson HU-54 carburetor. That model was used on the 024. Which one exactly should be stamped on the carburetor body. (for example: HU-54E or HU-54F)

Stihl rebuilt kit for the HU-54 is part number: 1118 007 1065
or you take the original kit from Tillotson which is called: RK14HU

From the pictures I can`t say which carb it is exactly.

The carb kit should look like this. (see the file attached)

Thank you DND 9000. Would you rebuild the stock carb or just buy a new aftermarket carb?

First I would give the carb a good cleaning. If possible with an ultrasonic cleaner. Otherwise I would spray carb cleaner through it. But be careful spraying through the jets, there are check valves in it and they can be destroyed. After that I would rebuild it with a rebuild kit and it should be good to go if nothing else is wrong.

Rebuild the old carb, if nothing mechanical is wrong new gaskets and diaphragms work about 95% of the time, two different style lines were used on the 024, 026 MS 260 series, and they are not interchangeable, the straight version was used on older models of the 024 and 026. We have not had good experience with aftermarket carbs and thus do not use or sell them.

Lot of time we put a new aftermarket carb. Have on maybe 10-12 saws this season, all worked well after.

For us, it's cheaper. Less labor cost plus sometimes a carb kit doesn't fix it, carb is too worn out.

I own 2 024 supers and each has the WT194 carb on them. A rebuild, with a good cleaning and they run like champs. I also keep several spare carbs since they also fit my 026's as well. I would never put on a knock off carb for a customer so I have 0 experience on them.
