. This is from the tannins my chain. Had the blue color on it. Was your wood green.

In the woods

Perfect timing, I have this two and have been unable to find anything on it.

Anyone know what it is, if it is preventable, and how deep it goes??

Mine was in fresh cut green wood.

It's the tannins in the green(wet) oak reacting to being in contact with steel. If you put an axe in a piece it with turn the steel the same color. Not sure how to prevent it yet.

. Here you can see it on the bar.

link 523 is on the money.
Oxalic acid should get rid of it

I had the same problem on a piece of Tasmanian Oak I found in a dumpster at work.
There was a major lab renovation going on and all the large lab bench tops (except this one) had been cut up into 4ft long lengths and dumped along with a whole lot of rubble.

After - this is my WW lathe bench top.

Bobl. What if anything was done in between start and finish?

dissolve the oxalic acid powder in water and spray a good wet coating onto the affected surface.
Repeat until the black marks disappear.
The Acid may lightly bleach the surface of the wood but the bleaching effect is quite thin and can usually be sanded off.
I can't remember the dilution ration but its available on the web or I could dig out my bottle of stuff as I think I wrote it on the bottle

link, yes thats exactly what i git going, it is what i would call a green tree after cutting it, but it actaully fell down about close to 4yrs ago propped mostly of ground i figured would be dry and hard , while hard it is rather wet inside. kinda sucks to see it go it is only 3/4 of the tree and what is left for the first 15ft is close to 4ft wide the other 1/4 broke off about 7yrs ago.
sucks i wanted to slab it up but just not feasible for me to buy huge saw and 5ft bar. prob cut it down and slab, i can get 17" boards with my home built mill and tiny 460

anyway i will try bleach or acid
also thanks bobL i have a can(wood bleach) oxalic acid here at work and the container says 3ozs (generous tablespoon) per quart of hot water

Skindaddy When you look at my avatar ,the bar is 60" cannon powered by a barely broke in ms-460. It spins skip square chisel by oregon, sharpened to my best after I made the loop the night before. My muffler mod started at the gasket; matching to outlet, Then flipping gasket & matching the opening into muffler w/.dual out cover with those openings enlarged the internal perforated capped chimney left also. I used Max Flo filter set up and pulled the plastic limiter caps and trimmed off the ears to allow for richening themix to tune to the new free-er breething I was very surprized at what occured  I don't push the saw into bog. She sings in 3 foot wide &wider cuts at the right feed. Touching up the cutters and depth gauges each tank helps my attitude about using 70cc class saw this way, but For Me it has worked all right thru white oak and Ash so far. If you were a bit closer I may have been more tempted to bring my toys up to play in a different state. I started off with ms-170 and a unit from HF like Beam Maker set up so if a person thinks their waythru the what if challenges more can be done than first glance would show :dancing: Your way is just that, please take into account all the recomendationsthat can be found. Be also safety conscious first, skill develops before efficiency and speed.
