066 value?

I'm looking into getting a used half wrap 066 with a 28" bar from a local dealer. It has new p/c and bearings. They reconditioned it so it looks pretty decent. They looked up the SN for me, its a '94 model. What would you guys think its worth? Before I tell you what price they've got, I want your opinion. Thanks.

Personally, for a non collectible 14 year old saw, I wouldn't want to give more than 1/3 of new price. I guarantee you they'll want more than it's worth.

A 94'? I don't care what's been done to it. I would not pay more than 450.00$USD. I prefer the full wrap for a bucking saw anyway. They surely want more, how much?

Make sure this has a new STIHL P&C though... not china, or the other china..

They're selling it for $650. Its high, I knew that, just not sure how high it was. I figure for that much, I might as well save some cash up and get a new 660 over an old '94. Thing is tho, I wont use it enough to justify the new price tag. Plus, I cant find any dealer around here who knows what the hell a fullwrap saw is! I'd only buy a new one if I could get a fullwrap.

LS: Dont know for sure on the P/C, im guessing its genuine, they're a very well respected shop in these parts.

If you're looking for a personal saw for recreation or whatever, then you might buy used. However, if you buy used, you're looking to save money. Paying 5/8 the cost of a new saw for something that is decades old is not saving money. You're investing in something that will not last as long or hold its value as well as a new saw, and will likely need more fixing.

So, in order to save money, which is really the only reason to buy used, you need to find a saw for cheap. (I came up with that one all by myself.) That means, in turn, that you need to make any major repairs yourself, if buying from a dealer, or get lucky in buying from an individual. Buying a used saw from a dealer is almost always false economy.

The local market will decide what it's worth. Tell them your offer. If it doesn't move in 30-45 days, they might reconsider..

Maybe so...but with a NEW P&C and bearings, seals gaskets etc...I'd expect 2500 hours out if it. So what's the problem with buying used?


BTW.. to buy that saw dead, and put the same OEM parts on it, you'd have to get to really really really cheap... to put it at $500...

You can polish a turd, and it may even stink like a real one, but in the end it's still a pile of ####!

In that case we should all stop rebuilding saws.. Same diff, as buying... and often we spend more rebuilding! At least you can take it back to the dealer if it messes up.

There is simply no justification in paying such high prices for old equipment. It makes as much sense as buying furniture from rent to own places.

Rehetorical question of course... but would you pay $1200 for an 088, $800 for an 084? $500 for an 064? $400 for an 036, $300 for an 026 - many will... and these don't have new P&C.. can't keep them on shelves at those prices..

Thats the thing that keeps me thinking about buying it. Hell, its guts are brand new. Its actually looks damn good considering how old it is. Should last me a loooooonnnnngggg time for the amount of use it will see from me. I figure my 260/361 combo will do all of what I would ever need to cut around here, efficiently, not really, but 90% of the time, they are. I was originally looking into getting a 460, but I got the 'bigger is better' mentality. So I determined I was going to look at used 660/066's.

The saw has the value in parts, I know in Canada, the one bearing is about $50 alone. So $100 for bearings and seals. Then the piston and cylinder is retail $297. The only major concern left how much time on the Crank. Cranks are about $225 new here also. I say give them an offer of $550 and wait, then check again in a few weeks if they don't take it at first. But that model saw demands a very high price, even blown up. One of the best all time saws in my books.

How many rent to own places are there in your town? Furthermore, I'm more apt to purchase something used that hasn't been tampered with. If it's got a new piston cylinder, then it's either been run enough to burn up the original or it's been abused. An old saw is an old saw regardless.

You mentioned the 460. That's what I just got with a full wrap and paid $785.00. I slapped a 24" bar on it and am beyond satisfied with the performance. I would weigh my options carefully. If you are looking at occasional use perhaps the "gutted" 66 is what you want. Andy is probably right about the life considering. Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck.
