On the advice of some folks on this site, I opened up the muffler on my Poulan Pro 295. I just opened up the port on the rear of the muffler to the size of the recess, and hogged out the 2 vent type ports so they are maybe 60-70% the size of the exhaust port, then drilled through the baffle from bottom to top. It made a big difference to the power, though it is still nowhere near my 024 super. I still don't think I could bury the the bar, but I think I'll leave the 20" bar on just for reach. I riched the mix up, and it seems lots happier.
How far should I take this? Should I drill into the muffler for more area, or be happy with what I got?

good start

nice start as first time saw hack:givebeer: next find a non safety chain and lower the riders a few thous an enjoy:clap:

mooseman you are comparing the PP295 46cc saw with a 20" bar and chain to a 024S 44.3cc saw with what bar and chain ?

I wasn't trying to make a comparison of the two saws, I was simply remarking that the PP isn't in the same league as the 024S. It wouldn't be fair at all to expect a mass-market consumer saw to keep up with a pro saw with a 4" shorter bar, and full chisel chain. I was just saying that the change was enough to make the saw much more usable, but no one is going to mistake it for a pro saw.
I was planning to put a shorter bar on it, and some better chain, but it cuts well enough now that I will leave it as is. I have 2 new low-kickback chains for it, which do suck, but I am of Scottish ancestry, and as it works well enough, I have to use them up. I think I'll try one more hole in the muffler, and call it done.

I am pretty happy with mine does your saw have the black or silver muffler on it? Power wise it is the same as my little Solo, build quality is not close to the Solo.
P.S get rid of that safety chain and get some Woodsman pro from Bailey's and if you are going to stick with the 20''bar get their skip chain.

I'd put another hole in the front of the muffler cover, put a 16" bar and pro full chisel chain on it and NOT cut the rakers, and run it. I'd like to get a 295 to fool around with and expirement with porting piston and cyl. on it.:greenchainsaw:

It has the silver muffler, which appears to be stainless. I'll think about picking up some skip tooth, but I don't expect to be using this saw that much.
