Hey fellas: I would like a little input. I have an oppurtunity to purchase a rental 270, 2 years old, chains, case, w/quickstop and fancy chain adj. Saw is about 80% for $300. Seems a little pricey to me??? Other saw is MS280, homeowner saw, about 80%, 4 years old, for $300. I am leaning toward 280 because of power, I beleive a little lighter, and dont really like quickstop feature or fancy chain adj. on other saw. Rental makes me a little leary as well. Input on these would be greatly appreciated! Thankyou!!!!

P.S. Should a guy be leary of 280's high-tech carb?????

just get a stihl ms361.
i hear it solves world hunger these days in addition to global warming.

sorry, i couldn't resist!:greenchainsaw: we all love that saw around here.
i'm sure someone more serious here can help you out.:)

I'd say 280 for the regular bar mount, if no other reason.

That 280 won't have IEM at that age. Mine is just a year old and doesn't even have it.

Love my 280. Run it with a 18'' bar and mod the muffler and you'll be happy. Very broad powerband with a lot of torque makes it a great firewood saw.

The 270 is just less power and torque with same weight. Still a good saw though.

Spend the extra money and get a new 280.

I would be careful with a rental saw.

No way you should pay $300 for a saw that was rented out and used by Lord knows who.

For $400 out the door go buy a Dolmar 5100 which will outcut the 270 or 280, comes with 3/8 chain, and is a professional grade saw

Not to discount the 5100 at all. By all accounts it's a bad saw, but I don't know if it'd outcut a 280. It is probably faster in small stuff, but I'd bet the 280 is better in bigger stuff.

I know that a 280 is easily better suited to anything over 10" than a 026, muffler mod or not.

$300 - na... Way way too high for a rental... And I would be very careful with rentals... would you lend your saws to just "anyone"?

It won't have the IEM. And if you do find one that does, don't worry - they work great.

i'd say neither for $300

Agree, but by far a "plain" 280, than a 270 with those :censored: add-ons!

Get a brand spanking new 280.
Kinda like a virgin, you will be the second one to touch it.

If the 280 was so well suited for bigger wood Stihl would have offered it with 3/8 chain.

I have not used a 280, but I do know the 5100 does not bog at all with its 17" bar buried in frozen red oak. Its a bbbaaaadddd little motha. The muffler is ported BTW.

Thanks fellas.....

Input well appreciated! Laughed my ass off on a couple of reply's. Will not go with 270, rental and extra crap to deal with. 280 is my choice, as far as switching brands, can't do it.....Only Stihl and Johnny-Red's in my area. Want to support local shop for obvious reasons!!!! Thankyou!!!!!!

8 :censored: Days till spring, about time!
