middle east: coast, that is.
so my bud gives me the 026 i mentioned previously. i was only supposed to fix a fuel line and tinker/tweek it a little for him. now it's mine, sweet!

the backstory:
as i was putting the av rubber nubbins in today i realized that there was oil all over the place on my bench after leaving it sitting there for two weeks. i decided to use the 'lakeside-castrol-superclean-then-rinse-with-hose-in-the-driveway-trick to clean this dirty nasty saw up enough to see where it was coming from (i think the cap).

the problem:
i was carefull not to get water in/on the carb. i didn't even think about the exhaust! i picked up the saw afterwards and it sloshed. i thought it was the fuel. i shook it a little and realized there was water in the muffler. i removed the muff cover and saw yes, it and the port were pretty wet inside. i looked in the cylinder and it appeared to be relatively dry with a few dropletts. the piston was just below the exhaust port. the cyl still had a light crosshatch!! in a moment of pure genius, fueled by my excitement over the nice cyl, i turned the flywheel to see the piston. doh! i pretty much just let a little water in when the rings passed the wet exhaust port.

now what:
am i completely screwed here? am i going to have to remove the jug and air out the crankcase? am i now in for horrors i can only imagine?
any input appreciated

No but water is not good for needle bearings. Turn it upside down pull it over without plug and I would pour some 2stroke oil in the cylinder not a lot shake it up and pull it over slowly. The water should evaporate and the fresh oil film will protect against rusting. Yes run it!

thanks

i'm heading out there after this post!
i was worried about running it. but, i trust your judgement.

note to all others who view this thread:
the castrol and hose thing is a fine cleaning method. lakeside is the man... it was my stupid mistake that the water got in.

Pickle it.

Like was mentioned, get some oil in it. I'l vary by saying get plenty in it. Pull the sparky out, and pull the starter over many times while saw is in many positions.

Drain with gravity over night. Next eve, fire and run/operate. DO be prepared to oil foul the sparky many times.

The solution to polution is dilution.

RUN IT TONIGHT!!!! You've got to get that water out of there before the bearings start rusting. Fire it up and let it idle and warm up good before giving in many RPMs. That way your sure to have lube on the bearings.

I left my 270 on my tailgate a few months ago, and drove through a ditch on the way out of the woods before I remembered the saw about 1/4 mile down the road. I stopped and there was no saw on my tailgate. I went back to the ditch and could see the top of the saw above the water line.

I drove back to my camp and poured water out of the muffler. Next I removed the cover over the carb, fortunately no water had gotten in there. So I started the saw and watched it blow more water out of the muffler for a couple of seconds. I had a couple of logs to buck up, so I ran it like I stole it for the next 10-15 minutes. The saw ran perfectly, no problems that day or anytime since were discovered.

I don't think you have much to worry about....

update

got the laptop in the garage.
have already run the saw.
i pulled the plug out and pulled it over about a dozen times. then sprayed some wd40 (water displacer 40 right) in the plug hole and pulled over about a dozen more times. reinstalled the plug. poured a drop or two of amsoil sabre into the gas tank (please don't flame me on sabre... i bought it before AS and have not used it to mix with). poured a half tank of clean fresh mix in. fired it up. idled for a little while and stopped it to type. how long should i run this for? extra oil cant hurt for this app, if i drain and re-fill before cutting? is chocking saw with finger a good idea when coming down from rev before shutting down tonight?

by the way the water thing only happened right before my orig post.
went right inside to ask you guys for the answer. the responses were fast and appreciated. thanks a mil. cannot express my gratitude.

uh oh

got no air filter. i was working on this thing...filter ordered but not here yet. never dreamed i'd have to run it. richened up the carb so as not to run fast at idle or lean. running in a clean environment in the garage is one thing (also stupid but i have no choice) but cutting would be a bad idea for dust and debris i think. i feel like i'm screwed again!

Don't sweat it. Rev it up a few times, get her good and hot and call it a day. You should be fine. I doubt you got much in there anyway from the sounds of it. Always better to be safe than sorry though.

I read on another forum

That a guy had dropped his saw into a creek.. He was asking what to do.. Someone honest to god replied to not try to pull it over as it could bend the valves.
I thought I would ad my helpful post.. seeing how someone knew nothing at all about anything in their valve post.. I replied that it could also damage the timing chain.. wtf? I sank a rotax snowsled once through the ice.. Talk about a bugger to get started.. Finally got it to run and it was fine there after.

I can't resist..... I'm sorry

gotcha.
did i mention i hate the constantly bleeding non adjust oiler.
wouldn't have noticed without running it in the shop like this.

Just get the hose and detergent and wash down the garage!

Volks-Man, I noticed your ode to the MS 361:

"on the stihl ms361:
it does not run on gas or mix. it runs on hopes and dreams. the exhaust has the smell of fresh cut flowers. the chain running under the clutch cover actually produces a rainbow instead of sawdust, even when theres no sun. the sounds produced by the engine are akin to the finest composition played by the finest orchestra in the finest music hall.

i could go on but everyone here owns one, so we all already know. "

Is it really that good? I just got a nice 036 Pro. Much difference?
Oh you should be fine on the water.

everybody is a comedian!
i would wash down the garage but i'm afraid i would get water in everything else i own. can't imagine having to run the cars untill i got all the water out of the cranckcases! and the idea of running my circular saws and sawsalls ect untill dry!

i really should have been more careful on that saw.
i could very well have ruined the valves and timing chain in it.:)

is it that good? right now it is typing this message! yesterday it walked my dogs for a solid hour. and it babysat my kid for the last two days while wife was working.:)

honestly, i have no expirience with the 036. so i can't compare. that said though, i do think the 361 is a wonder-saw. it really is smooth and powerful and....

produces rainbows!
