I have a couple saws with shredded pistons and jugs, but the cost of a new engine seems to be 3/4 the cost of a new saw.
If I can get an engine from a different model, how likely am i to have a match?
It seems like you can put a 55 cylinder on a 51, could I throw a 61 engine on a 51 crankcase?
Could I do it if i changed the carb?
Is it just a matter of the gaskets and seals lining up, or is there more to it?

Thanks, saw gurus!

The answer to your general question is, "it depends on the saw." There are models that have much in common with one another. The 61 P/C will NOT go onto a 51... they are very different in their age and engineering. A 55 piston AND jug WILL go onto a 51, and this is commonly done as there are performance gains. The other very similar saw to the 51/55 is the 50, but I don't think the top ends interchange. Many other parts will.

If I were contemplating doing this, I would use the search function to flesh out what I knew about the saws and what I was proposing to do. There is a mountain of info on the 51/55... they've been around for quite a while.

Here is a 3120 jug fit to a 2100 case I have been working on. Anything is possible if you machine it enough. This wasn't even close to fitting in almost every way you can think of BTW. There are many factors involved in doing a swap like this. A 55 cyl kit is about all that will fit your 51 without extensive work.

Cool, I think if i end up salvaging the 51, i will put a 55 P/C on it...any ideas on replacing a 350 P/C? It seems like that model is designed to be thrown away rather than replace the engine. The scoring inside the cylinder is much less severe than that on the piston, is there any way of boring it out to fit a new piston, or to slip in some sort of sleeve? Would a cylinder hone help? Exactly how bad of a score can they fix?

I love the engine mod, i dont have the tools or expertise to be machining anything, though.

Hello again, Clem! These guys are always very glad to help, provided they think you've extended yourself on the basics. What I mean to say is, do a few searches..... I would use "hone," "rebuild," "muriatic," "350," and the like in the site's search engine. I think you'll find it a rewarding pursuit and much faster than waiting for guys to get home from work and log on.

The 350 is more of a homeowner model, but it is nonetheless a good saw and very rebuildable. Wish I had one.

Welcome to the site! Let us know if you have troubles!

Romeo is right about the 51.

You can put a 353, and both the old and new 346xp engines, on the 350.

Thanks, everybody
I just got into the search function now...youre right its a goldmine...ill try it before i ask in the future.

Dang man, five minutes with a toothbrush and cleaner would do you some good. :)

Romeo, haven't seen you for a while - you've been very quiet :chainsaw:

looking at that pic, you have not torqued the cylinder correctly and your piston is installed backwards :)

seriously... if you need any help with the 2100 i have 3 mint originals and tonnes or spares, just give me the nod

I ain't gonna clean that one up, That is just a test fitting to a junk case. I haven't pulled the real McCoy apart yet. I will probably use the crankshaft from that one but thats about it, I have sort of bean picking that carcass clean for a few years.

Redprospector will vouch that I am guilty of filthy saws anyway:cheers:
