wet 026 lives. so now my 361 is dying?

went ahead and did the 460ho oiler mod to the 361 today. pulled the muffler before performing the indian rope trick to stop the piston. look inside and what's this!?!?

what the:censored: . i run three saws on this mix! no problems in the echos!
the plug is brown on one side and tannish on the other. the darned saw smells way richer than the others, my clothes stick of two-stroke whenever i use it. the marks seem to be just a little higher than the exhaust port on the opposite side. other than what shows in the pics there seems to be a small blemish (not a scratch, but something) just above 'scratched' spot. see the blemish around 11 o'clock in the second pic. the piston and rings, although a little coppery brown color, are like new.
is this normal wear? is this some of the stuff 'fish' was talking about in his 'experiment' thread?
now what?
i'm inches from throwing in the towel on this whole saw thing. everything i touch lately is turning to :censored: .

How do you know the rings are good? What is the compression.

rings are great where i can see them, at the exhaust port.
i have no compression tester. i only found this today about 2 hours ago.
if it helps, the saw runs like day one: smooth, fast, powerfull. still a bear to pull over without comp release.

to sum up, if i didn't see the cyl i would never believe it.

Maybe some dust got past the filter, my 361 lets in a fair amount of dust passed the filter. Pop off the intake boot and have a look inside, it doesn't look all that bad, but it shouldn't look like that.

That looks like damage cause by eating something though the intake... or a ring...but....I've never seen that particular "pattern" on the inlet side before. Are you the only owner? I'd be pulling the cylinder to check the rings.. but.. if it's under warranty, take it to your dealer and show him.

i'd almost do it right this minute but i'm waiting to hear from the big tech guys.

to clarify: the cylinder doesn't have the classic scoring we all see on AS.
i have an echo 610 with scoring and it is very different. lines go way up and down the cyl and the piston is marked up similarly. the bright lines in the pics are the drop light reflecting inside the cyl. the 'damage' is only about 3/16 - 1/4 inch tall.

Wear due to filter failure is usually below the intake, not above.

Nope.. Looks like the ring broke to me. The ring pins on the 361 are pretty much on the inlet, not like a "normal piston". Maybe a pin came loose?

Back to Stihl.. They'll fix it, and want to see it.

I absolutely wouldn't run it again.... in addition to torching the cylinder (if it isn't already toasted) you might FOD the bottom end.

and i will not run the saw again untill fixed by a dealer.
the saw reciept dated 01/26/08. i am not commercial. i have only run a dozen or so tanks through it. never had the air filter off. never turned a carb screw. i agree with 'the man' this is a warranty repair.
i will just keep telling myself that my bad luck with two strokes is going to end some day.

i keep reading my own sig..... gonna have to change it.

LOL, I bet you are right. However, the saw never failed, technically. I say Stihl gives him a new saw or repairs this one at no charge.

i am very sorry to be the one to shake the crown from the king.

in all fairness it could be my fault.
but in reality lakeside said it was an unusual pattern that he had not seen before. i'll go with lakeside. if he ain't seen it, it's rare. if it is that rare, then the chances are good that it is a fluke defect and not one of the common user mistakes that kill saws.

i'll keep repeating: 'it's not my fault, it's not my fault'
