Anyone use a belt sander to dress their bars. I got a Windsor 36 inch roller bar that's cutting seriously crooked (got it used). Chain is new so I know it's not the cutters. Just wondering what my best course of action is to fix it, or greatly improve it. Thanks

Not a hand-held belt sander (can't hold itdead square to the rails), but I have used a 12 inch diameter fixed sander with a table. But.. if it's badly worn, the easiest way is to get it ground at a saw shop.

Yes I have used a belt sander, the stationary industrial kind, to square up a bar. I have had good results. If there was more significant wear, I'd do what the other poster did and use a disk type sander-grinder with a precision table set at 90 degrees.

a vertical belt sander is pretty well all i use...mine is a 4" model and takes a 36" belt...nothing special..i put a carpenters sqaure up against the belt and the table that is on it to make sure it is 90* and then grind away..it works quite well...im using 80 grit sandpaper belts on mine..

I always use a belt sander. It's quick and handy.Wouldn't do it any other way!

I use a belt sander also. Just square it up before using with a machinst square and take many passes as opposed to a few heavy ones.

Yup a 1" x 42" 80 grit vertical sander is all I've used for YEARS no issues at all just make sure the table is 90* to the belt...

Also be sure to clean the groove and tip when your done.

I'll use a rail closer first. using a new chain to set correct grove width.

draw file is all I use to set rail... works great!

do have a 90 degree belt sander, will have to try it.

Baileys has a tool for that. Edge shaper/sharpener, $15.95.

I walked into Prizers and told the guy I needed a quick grind on my 44. He looked at me with puzzlement and said" In 20 years I have never heard of that, we just replace them". I looked at him in puzzlement and said "I'll take that saw over there". I needed a 44 that cut right then and there so I bought a whole new 44 right there and then. I take them both to Penn- Holo to be worked on. 6 bucks to square up a bar and it is so worth it. They think I am nuts because I have the same bar ground every 2 weeks. Actually that is not why they think I am nuts.
I would like to try one of those deburrers that have 3 sides, that should work. You can't get it right with hand files, you have to have a guide.
