I recently acquired a used MS460 off eBay and have seen pictures of a dual port type muffler on these. So here are my two questions. I checked the compression and it read 155. Is that pretty good? And, would a dual port muffler be something that would worth the money to add a little more power? I think you can get one for around $30. I will only be using this saw occasionally.

If you can weld or use a gas torch to braze with, you can do it yourself. Or, you can buy the dual port cover. Be advised, the new 460 saws have a smaller outlet hole in the back half of the muffler. The old Magnum mufflers were larger. You can enlarge the hole yourself with a file or die grinder. The dual port cover is a good option for a guy looking for some additional performance.

I bought the dual port cover from a Stihl dealer, and quite frankly, the gains were hardly noticeable, without a stopwatch, the average firewood guy isn't going to realize it. You will however notice the fuel getting used a little more, because the H screw needs to be turned out an additional 1/8 turn.
This is my experience, and opinion.

This is my 440 but the same muffler cover (works on 440 and 460). I paid $26.95 OTD for mine. It's worth it for making the saw sound better, not to mention the slight performance gain :)

modded muffler

The mod that I did to my 440/460 really woke them up, big difference in power. It's like another saw, sounds a whole lot better too. I hate the stock stihl sound, drives me nuts. But DP'd they sound awesome!:greenchainsaw:

gut the muffler and open up the stock hole..that baby will rip then..my recipe is....

gut the muffler, open stock hole, add the dp cover, and sometimes i've evened added a third exhause port

if the camera wasn't acting up id get some pics of some mufflers that i did this weeked gutted them with an mill and sandblasted them..waiting for paint right now

So, did you just bolt on a new DP muffler or did you also open up the exhaust port on the back half of the muffler as Four Paws said in his thread?

gut the muffer, open up the stock exhuast hole and put on the DP cover, retune carb and hold on!!

Hmmm....gut the muff, AND open the 1/4" hole in the main muff body. See, all I did was change out the covers and enrich the H screw. I'll play with it this weekend.

WHAT SQUARE INCH OUTPUT HOLE DO YOU RECOMMEND?

If you have a dremel tool go to your nearest box store and get a $6.00 carbide bit.

Works like a charm....... just don't forget to readjust the carb.

Oh yeah, you'll need to pull the screen to if you want the real gain otherwise get the DP cover and enlarge the stock hole if you want to leave the screens.

P.S. if you don’t want to take the time and effort it takes to remove the "cage" inside just use the same carbide bit to make the cage opening bigger. ;) …… about 150% of the exhaust opening at the piston ought to do it. Go about 85% to 90% of the opening at the piston for the hole size in the case.

I have two 046's. The one that came with the factory DP cover definitely runs better than the newer 046 with an new DP cover. The new cover sounds better but I think gutting and enlarging the rear hole will make a more noticeable difference...

muffler mod

I don't have the DP cover on mine, I just modded the stock one. I did a walker style mod on it. I put two 5/8" id pipes in the two top corners and angled them and brazed them in. I left the stock hole alone, just modded the cover. Maybe I'll get a pic of it.:greenchainsaw:

Dual port mufflers allow the saws to breath better. You will need to bump the fuel up a bit (lots of info on site about that) It did notably increase the power of my 066. Also it allows the saws to get rid of heat better which will allow the saw to last longer.
