It's time for me to start a poll. Help me build my MS660 that should be delivered tomorrow. I know going into this that it needs at least a piston and rings. I don't know if the cylinder is good or not. It will have to be in excellent shape if I'm going to use it. To much time involved to use a questionable jug. I'll know tomorrow.

This is going to be a full tilt Snellerized wood slaying machine. At least that's my goal:clap: The goal is ultimate torque with RPMs in the 15,000-15,500 range. This will be a woods saw, but I want to make it the most I can with what I know how to do. I'll be farming out the P&C to have the piston hi-topped and the jug decked. I'll be doing the rest.

Here's the question. Do you want to see me do this with a new BB kit from Baileys or a OEM P&C? Performance is the question. Which one will give me the most considering what I'm doing to it.
 
I wish I had more run time on my 066BB that has a milled p&c, so i could give you some more input on it. I know it pulls good..but i don't have a stocker that has had the work done to it that this one does
 
Try one of the new BB kits with the coated piston.

If you don't like it, you are only out $130...chump change to you Brad...HAHAHAHA
 
i would just get oem its better quality. There were threads on here about how the oem cylinders were actually nikasil compared to chrome plated bailey cylinders.Nikasil is way better.i would still go with oem quality.. With your budget i would just get a bigger displacement saw. Rather than try to make one using a aftermarket cylinder and piston kit.

Bailey's current kits are NiSi plated, not chrome. I'm wondering if the kits have been improved since they were first released. Read the description. Bailey's Kit Link

What drawbacks does putting a BB kit on have??? There's no warranty obviously or you'd be getting OEM anyways. It's cheaper eh? More power eh? I got some interest in this since I'm thinking of rebuilding my 288XP...

For $110 I would go with the BB kit. Easy to get, cheap, bigger your getting the ports and other work done to it anyways so exact efficiency of either casting isn't that critical. I would think the only thing possible that the stock has going for it is possible the cylinder liner quality and provided the Baileys don't just outright suck I would think you couldn't loose with Bailey's.

I have been using a ported and muffler modded BB660 for the last few evening and it is pulling a full comp 28" bar with an 8 pin sprocket with absolute ease through seasoned and hard burr oak and hickory and I am burying the bar. I do not have the piston lowered or the cylinder milled, but sILlogger has had this done to his saw and he feels there was an increase in power.

I was advised that whatever increase in power due to piston and cylinder machining to increase the compression is so slight (although it is present) that the gains do not offset the negatives in increased crank bearing wear and tear.

While there is something to be said for having the ultimate "whatever" sometimes the last 10% toward that goal of ultimate comes at a heavier cost........in this case increased bearing wear and tear, plus more critical tuning, which in your case may not be an issue but for a working saw at the end of the day you are not going to measure any increased productivity between a BB kit properly ported and modded.......... and a decked/milled//ported/modded saw on anything more than a stop watch and you can make up that time, just by walking to the next tree a little quicker, LOL.

Just a thought for a working saw, but I do understand that this is a disease/addiction, and we can only do what we can to get the next fix, LOL.

Josh means that the pistons that come with the big bore kits now have some kind friction-reducing coating. I have BB 046 and BB 044 kits here and both have the coated pistons.
 
thanks for pointing that out about the nikasil, i don't know seems like they are a decent quality. The only difference is the oem cylinder and piston has been proven for quality. these havent. It wouldn't hurt to try at that price though.If four paws is talking about coated pistons, the coating its suppose to provide less friction, i personally hate them they have them for dirt bikes a brand named vertex the coating wears off its completely useless to me
 
Has the porting been fixed in the BB kits? The first generation weren't well received...

The biggest complaint I remember reading about was the size of the combustion chamber. Some piston work and proper squish adjustment I thought fixed this.

I don't recall the conversations on the ports. As long as the ports weren't too high to begin with it really won't matter. I'll be degreeing and changing it anyway.

Any diffs in skirt width?
