Will the newer chain brake/ hand guard with the 2 cut outs swap with the older no cutouts guard and work with the older partial wrap chain brake?

Thanks,
mech

try a search. I have asked this same question, and was directed to the search function. The information is there!

search hints?

Ahh man, I figure the information is out there. I can't find it. I gave up searching and posted. I didn't think this was a tough question. Must be 028 fatigue. There are 1000s of threads in this forum alone. I have read a lot. I have created a "028 - best of AS" word doc with pics and p/n's. I have the IPL.

This was the best chain brake thread I found.

This looks like this might be the answer from kd460 "The earlier version does not cross over and the linkage is a little different on the older version. You will need the correct black plastic gaurd/handle also, as they are different and you need the correct one."

I was hoping for a solid answer.

Got any search hints? These are the search stings I have used on this computer, probably more on my other computer...

028
028 "chain brake"
028 brake
028 break
028 guard
028 gaurd
028 handle

I searched thru kd460's 028 threads.
I searched thru rreidnauer's 028 threads.
I searched thru your 028 posts. Did you get a P&C for your project 028 and fire it off yet? I didn't see a new 028 thread started by you.

There is a lot of imformation here, but I am at the point I would rather just buy every type of brake handle ever made and toss what I don't need rather than search anymore.

I believe there might be two different versions(other than appearances) in how they mount at the activation lever above clutch cover. But not 100% sure. I know there are several versions that do work, different vent holes, labeling, etc....

I just picked up a nice used one at my dealer, it has smaller vent holes and reads STIHL in large letters on the front.

You can make anything adapt to anything

Given enough time and or money.

It is a lot easier to use the right parts for the right styles.

I have the old style handles available.

PM me if you need one

OK, if I remember right from when I searched this out, there are actually 3 versions of the 028 in regard to chainbrakes. The oldest has no reliefs in the cover that would be the chainbrake cover and cannot be changed to accept the chainbrake. i may be wrong there. The second version comes with the cover with reliefs for the chainbrake assembly, but it is not installed. You can add the hardware to make this saw have a chainbrake. The third, obviously, has a chainbrake system.

Post us some pics and maybe we can tell you what ya got and if it can be made to have a chainbrake!

handles and brakes from Ebay

I just got a matching old-style brake setup and the handle that came off the same saw so I know they will match. I had to Email the Ebay seller a bunch of times to get the answer I needed.

PES+ was very helpful in directing me to the correct brake parts, you can take his advice as 100% accurate.

I had to bid in the last minute to get my parts last night, I wonder if another AS member was bidding against me?

Pes+ is a good source of info and parts.

.............and it wasn't me bidding against ya, I acquired the handle I needed locally. Honest.:)

How are things up in the Adirondacks these days? I spent my childhood up there camping around the Fulton Chain every summer, grew up in a small town north of Utica.

It would've been OK if you were bidding against me. Hey, we all need parts.

Bowtie, I have the older chain brake in PES+'s pictures in the thread above that kogafortwo needed and the same one you described. Because of the way people slice and dice up saw parts on ebay I was thinking I may need to gather parts. I wanted to see if I could put a new handle on an old brake.

Kogafortwo, I watched the brake parts go without bidding because of the handle. First time I have watched an ebay auction at the end. Like bidding roulette, nice last second snag. There seemed to be a lot of action, it all flashed by before I could read what was happening.

I have been hitting local and not so local dealers. I have enjoyed meeting some of the characters, getting them to talk about their shops, saws etc. Most seem to get 028's in but didn't have any at the time or the newer type. One guy seemed to have just cleaned out the shop, bummer. I have been hoping to find an old timer who never heard of chopping up saws for the internet and hasn't ever thrown out a saw part that might be useful, with a big barn. I also have an eye out for an 066 project to run a CSM and clear some land.

thx

Ebay winning bid

Hey Mechaniacal,
Yeah, this was a close one. I got it for what it was worth to me and the seller confirmed that his old handle came off the same saw after I already won it, so I got lucky more than once.

If you find that dream deal of a bran full of old saws, let me know if you find an 046 with a ported muffler and a 24" bar for say, $50 or so. I will drive up there personally to pick it up!

Adks are good for late winter verging on mud season. I re-located about six months ago to the southern tier-finger lakes area, but the name will have to do.............

I wouldn't knowingly bid against one of my AS brothers, especially if someone linked to it here, but if ignorant alls fair game right?:D
