Hi All,

I recently fell a few trees on my property (Vancouver, BC) and then had an arborist come by and finish off the ones that were dangerous. I thought the trees were Elms but he says they are Butternut or a type of walnut. Spent a lot of time trying to figure it out but the leaves are not in yet and its the first year ive owned the property. Any help would be great. I will have the wood milled if it makes financial sense. The largest tree was 3' in diameter and 100' tall. The others were smaller but around 2' in diameter. The heartwood goes dark as soon as it is cut and after about 2 weeks the whole log goes quite dark as shown in the pics. The bark is course, and goes dark brown when wet but looks a bit greyish when dry but was covered in a ton of moss.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to clean the yard up asap, thanks!

Looks like Black Walnut.
Butternut has different looking leaves.(Symmetrical and compound and looks a lot like an Ash leaf)
If you can find the nuts, they will tell what you have. Walnuts look almost round whereas Butternuts are more oblong shape.

That's beautiful wood. I second the black walnut opinion. Even if it weren't I'd still mill it

I'm from that area and I can tell you one thing by the pic...I can tell which was the north side of the tree from it laying on the ground but now its down and I can't find my way home.

'Cus I'm wasted and I can't find my way home,
IDK...lots of planted trees in the city that I'm not familiar with in mid Island Area?
Welcome to AS ...BTW
Sorry I couldn't be much help but there are some great ISAs on here that sure know their business.
