6 foot tulip stump. How long would it take you to grind and what machine are you using?

I run a 25hp super jr with a green wheel, but was too scared to attempt this monster with it. I am renting a 35 hp diesel bandit grinder, the belt driven one not hydraulic. I am curious to see how long a monster like this would take for the average stumper out there, and what machine they are using.

Actual grind time, with the exposed roots, I'd say 1.5-2 hours tops...6-8" below level grade.

Wow, that sounds nice. I figure if I was grinding with my machine I would be 4-5 hours grind time. Some of that time would be getting chips out of the way, but I figure the machine would run for at least 3.5 to 4 hours.

I started the job on Thursday with a rented Bandit 33 hp kabota 2450 with green teeth. Got to the site about 9:15 and ground for about 3 hours getting as much as I could. I left one guy to start the clean up and went out and ground another 2 jobs with the rented diesel.

I returned and after filling a 6x10 dump trailer, ground out the majority of what I missed the first time.

I came back the next day to finish the clean up. Ended up taking about 12 yards of material out of the site.

I charged $1400 for that job, and made an extra $1100 grinding some larger stumps with the diesel. So after the cost of the rental (475 for the day) I made out alright and plan on renting it again for big jobs when I can line up a few of them.

I loved the diesel with sharp teeth, but once they got a little dull, and once it got into a chip pile, it bogged down pretty hard. I loved it at first, and thought it was a must buy, but after some time with it, my 1625 with a green wheel is more of a money maker when you take into consideration the actual cost of the machine and cost of the extra teeth. I am curious to see if the 44hp diesel like on a 4012 would be worth making the jump from gas to diesel.

Towed unit? You taking down a section of the fence, or hoping for a big gate?

Yeah it's a towed unit. I'm for just backing through the fence, "sorry, who put tat fence there?"

I did a bunch of stumps today, all at one job location...so I timed it.

Here is the run down of the stumps. All measurements were of the face of the stump (not of the root flare). All stumps ground to at least 6-8" below ground. Two of the stumps I went deeper on.

Red bud (uprooted) 18"
Ornamental Honey locust 14"
Ash 28"
Tulip poplar 51"
Tulip poplar 39"
Tulip poplar 48"
Ash 20"
Tulip poplar 24"
Tulip poplar 32"
Tulip poplar 32"
Tulip poplar 41"

Picture of stumps...one picture didn't focus right sorry.

Started with semi dull teeth, but rotated to a fresh edge about half way through the stumps.

I figure I used about 8 gallons of deisel fuel. So, basically I did 29 feet of stump in 4 hours.

Also if I was only going 6-8 inches it would take me only 25 mins probably. Since 90% of the time we are replanting in the same location I need to clear the whole stump out.
