What to do with these pines? Raleigh, NC

Well good. That's about the best you can hope for in most of these situations. It takes some really high dollar trees or a really healthy timber market before most small forest lot owners can make some money.

Alot of Dead Oaks in NC...

I work for the NC Forest Service and we've found oak leaf miners in a lot of oaks (usually white) in the Warren and Franklin county areas (I don't work west of Warren). Its usually just a defoliator, but I suspect they hit the oaks pretty hard due to the drought stress. Drought stress +...

Looking for a new push mower

Hello people. My girlfriend and I are looking for a new push mower to replace the POS Bolens that broke (think it's a bad piston ring). I've searched the forums but it seems most threads are geared towards commercial ($$$) mowers. Anyway, here are the criteria: Priced around $350-400...

    Forest firefighter ??

Since most of yall don't know what's happening in the world of wildland firefighting I thought I'd post a little info. The west has gotten off on an early start with their fire season and it almost seems to me that there are an above average number of near misses. Just in the last few days...

    Forest firefighter ??

The new shelters are almost twice as bulky and probably 1.5 times as heavy...and they are actually smaller in size. Your buddys better make sure they bring theirs into the woods. I'd hate to have to cram two people into them. They actually come in a large size now. I'm 5'-8" and I fit...

    Forest firefighter ??

$60? Wow that was cheap. We pay $325 for the new shelters. If we get cold we build camp fires....carefully of course;)

That would be one heck of an expensive blanket.

    Forest firefighter ??

We train a lot in the NC Forest Service. During our basic strategy and tactics course we had to dig hand line in a simulation exercise. The division supervisor (instructor) told us on the radio to bail out. While we ran, another instructor told us to deploy our practice fire shelters. One of...

    Forest firefighter ??

The new fire shelters are a couple of layers of aramid with reflective fabric on the outside. It reflects the radiant heat of a fire, however it can't handle convective (hot air) or conductive (hot object directly on the material) heat. Like everyone said, it's a last ditch device...

    Raleigh, NC Urban Logging?

I suspected he'd have info ready for you. I'm glad we could help. If you ever have any questions on forestry, or even shade tree/arborist questions, then ask the county ranger. I think that Chris, like many NCFS employees in urban areas, is a certified arborist.

    Raleigh, NC Urban Logging?

Ooooh, good advice DGG. There was once a case in Raleigh where a man harvested his mature pine plantation. Everything was harvested. Apparently in Raleigh you must leave a buffer on public roadways and the city told him he must replace the trees with equally sized trees. Obviously it's...

    The BEST homeowner chainsaw

Best performance? Probably the Dolmar 5100 Best cost/performace? The Husqvarna 350. It should cost you $320-330. I have one and it has been absolutely reliable. Keep it sharp and tune the carb and it'll do all the cutting any homeowner needs...Those 34 inch diameter oaks do take a little...

    master II deluxe

Getting the bridge off a Butterfly or Dragonfly would be nice. I got a piece of 3/8" Ultratech and some delta links. I think a bridge is nicer than the central connection because it distributes your weight much better and is more comfortable.

    Seeking Forestry advice in VA

10 year old loblolly pines in the coastal plain (more productive soils) can reach 30-40 feet, but in the piedmont you'd expect half of that height in most areas. True, 10 year old pines are worth nothing, but they may be ready for a commercial thin in 3-6 years depending on the current...

    Seeking Forestry advice in VA

That's a good very conservative estimate. Although if it's all straight pine 14+ inches in diameter and 80+ feet tall it could potentially be worth as much as $5000 an acre. Thats depending on location, tract size, access, and a whole lot of other factors.

    suggestions on lightweight chainsaw

A small rear handled Echo like the CS-306 or CS-346 would do well. They are very light at only around 8 lbs and aren't expensive (but have better quality than equally priced larger saws). Make sure you get one with a rear handle. Top handled chainsaws aren't as user friendly on the ground. How...
