    Is Royal Paulownia a weed?

I'm not exactly sure what I want to do yet. There is about a 50-75 foot line I want to screen out. The home will be a hundred yards away so I don't need a dense screen I just want to enhance privacy and to fill in one bare looking vista. But I'm not sure I want to make the screen too deep...

    Is Royal Paulownia a weed?

Hmmm, I'm leaning to tulip poplar because it is native. Although I'm curious to see about the paulownia, I am afraid of invasiveness. I'm not sure I want to see them all over the area and know that it was my doing. Plenty of trees I can borrow from around. Maybe a native mix, heavy on the...

    Is Royal Paulownia a weed?

Someone has been lucky enough to buy the woods next to my house and is clearing it. I am thinking of planting a few Royal Paulownia, but have not spoken to anyone with much knowledge about it. The local nurseries don't carry it and are skeptical. Of course some websites tout it as the...

Demoralized and a little embarresed, oil filter stuck

Done!! Eight screws to take off the skidplate. The ninth was missing most likely due to a previous oil change. The plastic flap that attaches to the side of the skidplate under the filter had the corners cut off by someone. Clearly to facilitate oil changes. I bought the truck used 4...

Demoralized and a little embarresed, oil filter stuck

I have been routinely throwing an old towel in the skid plate to catch the oil that spills. I have free access to a supply of towels that would be thrown out otherwise. I never had this happen before. Last time I changed the oil it dripped a little, when I went back to tighten it, I guess I...

Demoralized and a little embarresed, oil filter stuck

Not very. I have about 1/8th turn rotational ability from the top. Nothing at all from below. Getting a wrench at the base of the filter is nearly impossible. But I might be able to break the seal with a chisel and side cutter. I tried the screwdriver but was only able to get one hand on...

Demoralized and a little embarresed, oil filter stuck

I was afraid to post this because I feel like I should have known better, but maybe someone can help. I was changing the oil filter on my PU and it is just stuck. Does anyone have any ideas for getting it off. I first tried the hexagon thing that fits on a ratchet. It slipped repeatedly...

    Drought resistant shade trees?

In anyones experience what would be the best shade tree for drought resistance in central Virginia? I believe I could nurse small tulip, oaks, sweet gums that are already on the property. I also have beech and others but I'm not sure what volunteers I have of those. I would be okay going to a...

    Stihl 180 or 210

I would definitely add the 250 would not be wrong. The $50 difference will not matter in the long run. I've carried a 250 around my property all weekend without ever thinking that it was heavy. I have a 028 and a 310, and when it comes to cleanup after a storm, I almost always reach for the...

I think the question arises who will sponsor a new forum. This is an awesome site, but you gotta feed the bulldog.

    arborists vs. rec climbers

The way I see it the pro climber is more like a young spry monkey or chimpanzee, While the rec climber tends to be more of a species like the one in my avatar.

Slick trick for starting a fire.

Thanks. I need to think more in terms of hot gases and convection as opposed to radiative heat.

Slick trick for starting a fire.

How about putting some wood on one or two SIDES of the kindling pile? I wonder if good heat is getting out sideways that could be reflected into the central combustion. I tried this with a campfire a couple weeks ago and it seemed to really help.

Slick trick for starting a fire.

I take a duraflame log and cut into about 100 pieces about the size of a golfball. Use one piece to start. Practically free to start a fire. :)

    sweeetgum for firewood?

Black gum, nyssa sylvatica, is a totally different type of tree around here than sweet gum or red gum, Liquidambar styraciflua. Black gum is my favorite tree in the forest for beauty. The leaves turn the brightest colors in the fall. I've split Sweetgum by hand. It's hard to do. took...

    sweeetgum for firewood?

I asked the same question last year. http://arboristsite.com/showthread.php?t=44847 I ended up with a couple PU loads from a neighbor. It is about twice as hard to split as oak, but seems to burn just fine. I don't heat the home, but burn good amount in the fireplace.
