    Best pole saw?

A stihl "pole" or stick saw as I call them runs you about 700 bucks..Is that neccesary for a hobby orchard? I think not. I was talking in the department of pole saw, like manual, not with an engine. THe stihl stick saws are SWEET though, we use them all the time for our contract with verizon...

    I measure trees........with commentary!

Go to the arnold arboretum if you want to see some nice oaks and redwoods. One of the best arboretums in the world. I used to live just blocks from it. THey have dawn redwoods probably 70-90 feet, and not jsut one or two like 10-12 of them. Also tons of other beautiful trees, the biggest silver...

    "Pruned" American Elm

Elms will take heavy pruning. I mean heavy, like cutting a 6 inch peice back to a 1/2 inch lateral. If you have ever been to Boston Common you will see examples of wht i am talking about. They sucker like crazy. You could have kept that tree, lots of management would have been required, but you...

    Best pole saw?

Personally I like the 10' length with a marvin head. Wooden handle, basswood is great, ash and hemlock also make good "poles". Replaceable if you break them, super light and cheap. Th ehead is like 50 bucks at least, but the poles only like 20 a peice. just keep putting the same head on the new...

Shade tree crown reduction? root stimulator?

I am all about tree preservation, dont get me wrong...Tell me how mychrorhizae will prevent or further rectify a situation involving a bent over birch tree? Cutting the top off to a decent lateral will allow it to live, for the time being, with relatively decent aesthetics. The same goes for any...

Trees die "from the top down"?

Trees dies from natural selection. Top down dieback is typical in a residential setting where construction and compaction are issues. Otherwise some branches die becuase lack of light, other from injury, and others from alleopathy, nutrient unavailability, etc etc...(essentially natural...

the dangers of cutting down leaners

After looking at the pics again, I realized it wasnt the entire top but just a lead the had broken off. Either fell the entire tree or fell the one with the top hung up. Depending on situation.

the dangers of cutting down leaners

Depending on how high is was and how hung up, I woudl cut it from the ground. Face and bore cut with the notch directly opposite the fallen top, trip the strap with a polesaw, stick saw... If if was real hung up and I was unsure of the forces I might get a rope involved, but int he woods away...

Articulated loader, ASV or just Winch

Articulated loaders are typically too big for residentiual work. I think Gehl and a few other companies make them that are less then 4' wide. IMO a skidsteer is an irreplacable machine. Move wood (at the shop, on the job) Load trucks, plow snow, grade, dig, etc etc... I would never be without...

    Drum or disk 10-14" chippers

chippers I find that drum has more consistent chip size. We have two bandit 1590's and both spit out small chips (anvil being adjusted correctly, and newish blades). The only issue we have is the velocity ofg the chips. The trucks dont ever really get packed full, and when we are just...
