    What is this bug?

Wow, that’s embarrassing. I’m surprised I’ve never seen a ladybug in that stage. Thank you.

    What is this bug?

Noticed a bunch of these on a birch last fall. Have not seen them before or since, but wondering what they are and if there’s anything I should do to prevent them from returning if they are harmful.

Not sure what’s wrong with my poplar

Last year, one branch did not produce leaves. I attributed it to a late freeze we had in the spring. This year, the top two thirds of the tree look mostly dead. The branch that was barren last year is now losing its bark. Most people I’ve called only do removals, but I’m not quite ready to...

    Taking down a willow

Thank you, gentlemen. The previous homeowner planted this tree. I agree that generally this would be considered on city property. City replaced the sidewalk last year due to significant damage from the roots. They cut those roots, but it's still a messy tree, and the neighbors hate it. I...

    Taking down a willow

I need to take down this willow, but I don't feel comfortable felling it as is. The trunk is 40" in diameter. There are four main limbs that split out from the trunk at about 6' from the ground. The canopy is a lot wider than what you can see in this photo. My saw is 18". I'd have to rent...

    Small leaf linden barely growing

Not sure if this shows it well; the mulch probably hides a bit of the flare, but it's there (the mulch is not actually touching the trunk).

    Small leaf linden barely growing

No offense taken. I appreciate the advice. I'm having trouble with photos from my phone, but I will try again from my computer. I planted it myself and I remember specifically not planting it too deep after reading that it was a common mistake. There is a flare where the trunk meets the ground.

    Small leaf linden barely growing

Thank you. I'd like to think the depth is proper.

    Small leaf linden barely growing

I have a linden (Tilia Europea) that has barely grown two feet or so in six years. When I planted it, the trunk was either 2" or 2.5". Now it is 3.25". The crown has filled in nicely, and it's actually a good looking, symmetrical tree. It's just not growing at the rate I expected. Last...

    Which Echo model?

    I appreciate the sanity check.

    Which Echo model?

    Good to know. Thank you.

    Which Echo model?

How so, my T-10 brother? How are they different than Echo? I was comparing the Shindaiwa 491s to the Echo CS-490, and they appear to be the exact same saw. Same displacement, price, weight, etc. I could not tell a difference other than color, chrome-lined piston (omitted from the CS-490...

    Which Echo model?

    Got it. Thank you.

    Which Echo model?

Taking another look at the 490. Only two pounds heavier than the lightest models, magnesium case, rim sprocket, and up to 20" bar. Are you, gents, running a 0.325" chain or 3/8"? It seems odd that the smaller CS-400 calls for a 3/8 chain on an 18" bar, but the CS-490 calls for a .325 chain...

    Which Echo model?

Thank you. What's in question: wear, impact, or tensile strength? Trying to determine if magnesium is worth the extra $.

    Which Echo model?

Thank you, gents. I stopped at a local dealer today. The 590 was heavier than I expected. I would not feel comfortable climbing with it for limbing work. I will likely go with two saws. I will either have to buy one and rent the other for the 40" willow, or see if I can get a good deal for...

    Which Echo model?

I'm looking to buy my first chainsaw. I would like to go with Echo. There are so many models, I'm just not quite sure what might fit me best. I don't expect to use it more than a few times a year, for no more than 2-3 hours each time. While I would think that 14-16" bars should be plenty for...

    Bartlett Pear Tree and Pollination

I would like to plant a Bartlett pear tree, but do not have space for another for pollination. This would go next to a Callery pear. I think they bloom at the same time, but I don't know if they can cross-pollinate since the Callery does not have edible fruit. Will I get fruit from the...
